I use a programme at work that allows me to play back recorded calls.

Unfortunately it doesn't allow me to actually rip/download those calls, only to play them back. This is inconvenient as some of them need to be saved offline and edited.

Can anyone think of a free programme or utility that will allow me to record what's currently playing on my laptop and save it as an MP3 or similar?

+2 for Audacity.

You might have to enable 'stereo mix' or similar to record what you hear. Right click the speaker in the system tray and go to recording. Then right-click in the white space in the list of devices and enable disabled/disconnected if you can't see it; once you find it right click it and select enable.

±4,

Check the source/input, you can get a perfect recording depending which option you choose, think the one you want is wave mix.

Mute your mic / webcam and set windows volume to max (turn speakers down)

Get realplayer. Don't listen to them, they are trying to get you to use rubbish 'open source' software. It doesn't even come with any free toolbars!
