My refurb Dell Inspiron 3520 died after a Dr. Pepper incident, its performance was ok for a £290 laptop, Intel i5-1235u cpu, ram was 8GB which I upgraded to 16GB, 512GB SSD and there was a 120hz full hd display, however the hdmi output was an appauling 1080p and it seems that this is the case for all the new Dell Inspiron 15 laptops as well, shocking! My really old spare laptop is much less powerful but still outputs 1440p via hdmi ffs.

I've realised through experiece that the main performance limiting factor with all the laptops I've owned hasn't been the RAM size or SSD, which are upgradeable components anyway, but rather the CPU, so I was looking for a laptop with a true quad core cpu i.e. performance cores, I've developed a fondness for Intel cpu's over the years but would be willing to switch back to AMD if the price to performance ratio is better.

Main use cases are casual computing/workstation/photo editing, budget is £500, I've had a look on ebay at refurbs but the search function is crap as nothing is catagorised properly, so struggling a little bit as I'm not au fait with the different laptop brands available, only real requirements are a quad core cpu, upgradable to at least 16GB RAM, full hd display and at least 1440p output whether thats via hdmi, DP or USB-C.

Nice to haves would be, number pad, backlit keyboard, windows pro, and G/A-Sync.

If anyone can suggest some Brands or Models that meet those requirements I would really appreciate it, thanks. :)

IF graphics are not a massive priority I would take a look at refurb HP Probooks (G9 and upwards) or Lenovo T/P models.

Probook wise if you look for 445 or 455 models they have AMD CPU's with full cores (generally either 6 or 8 core "U" models) and have upgradable RAM and NVME. Anything beyond G9 (IIRC) Intel (so 440/450) wise will be 12th gen or newer.

Recently got a refurb 440 G9 for my MiL from Ebay and can't fault it for the ~£180 we paid.
