After over a decade of sterling service, I‘ve been forced to admit that my i5 2500K has had its day and needs replacing as it’s below minimum spec for at least one AAA title I fancy playing.

Bits that need to go:

- i5 2500K CPU

- ASUS P8P67 MB

- 16GB Corsair Vengeance Blue 1866MHz RAM

Planing to keep Vega 56, 5 year old 850W PSU and brand new Samsung SSD.

Would like new CPU and MB to be compatible with 2 month old Thermalright Assassin King 120SE cooler at all possible.

Game at 1080p with no plans to go larger or wider.

Thanks in advance.

Budget?

If the minimum spec calls for more than your i5-2500K, it's probably going to have a GPU bottleneck with your Vega 56, just saying.

Intel/DDR5 for £500:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £489.94 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Would look for a deal to get the 13500, if possible, since it has 4 more E-Cores.

Yeah, I’m already thinking that she’ll need to go next.

I think an AM4 system with a 5700X is probably the current bang for buck king.

A520 £60~
5700X £170~
32gb of decent DDR4 £60~
Even though the AM4 is EOL, I would rather spend an extra £60 and get a better B550 motherboard to allow OP to make better use if OC/UV features which AM4 responds to very well.

However, seeing as OP keeps his hardware for a while (ok along time) would urge him to consider AM5 platform as in three or four years, he could buy the last of the line CPU then and literally just plug in a 9XXX chip for a couple hundred or less and get a further 4 years from his platform.

It is for that reason I would not recommend any LGA1700 Intel products at this juncture as there is very little upgrade path as we have just seen the 14th gen release which was underwhelming...a couple extra fps for a whole lotta more power.

My recommendation is for:

AM5 7600 £220
MSI Pro B650M £175 or the Asrock B650M for £180. Both are on preorder so if timing is essential then the MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk (ATX) for £199
Add to this DDR5 RAM either the Teamgroup Vulcan EXPO 5600MHz for £100 or the preferably faster with same timings Teamgroup Delta 6400MHz for £120

Total between £495 and £540. As mentioned, a couple hundred quid in 4/5 years gives you upto 8+ years service. These will fit the TR Assassin cooler with the use of an adaptor which should have come in the kit.

BTW, you could save £50 - £75 is going for an ASUS board (Prime/TUF) but I would avoid like the plague as their VRM cooling is pants

Yeah this would be better than an AM4 setup I’m afraid.

Future upgrades and performance wise, AM5 is great even if you’re initial CPU won’t be as amazing as a 5800X3D.

Well, if @Terminal_Boy wants to really up the ante, he could always throw in a 7800X3D but that ups the cost of entry another couple of hundred quid. No point in going for 5800X3D on EOL platform.

Thanks all, am watching French Vendredi Noir deals to see if this is do-able before the new year as Herself just reminded me that the car is due a service.
