Brother may be looking to upgrade his current 'pc' to something a little more up-to-date (P4 system!), so two options to think about:-

Option 1

Intel Core i5-2300 2.80GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6790 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (11194-00-20G)

Corsair Builder Series CX 500W ATX Power Supply (CMPSU-500CXUK)

Gigabyte H61M-S2V Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard

Seagate Barracuda 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DL002)

Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9)

LiteOn IHAS124-19 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM

Approx - £430

or pre-built:-

Option 2

"Titan Krypt" AMD Phenom II X4 850 "95W Edition" 3.30GHz Quad Core DDR3 System

System Specification
- Case: Antec 300 Gaming Case
- Power Supply: OCZ 700w StealthXStream II

- Sound: 7.1 Channel Sound (On-Board)
- Optical Drive: OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black)

Options applied to the above product:
No Sound Card Upgrade

Options applied to the above product:
XFX ATI Radeon HD 5770 Single Slot 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with Stalker & AVP Games

Approx £470

He likes to play the odd game (not a serious gamer) and would like to play some of the later titles including BC2 (maybe BF3....maybe..) at a resonable speed. He only has a 17" monitor which can be upgraded later and a tower case, keyboard and mouse so no need to buy any of that. Keeping it cheap (below £500) but enough power to play the above would be fantastic.

So, thoughts? Any of the above to avoid? Any other suggestions?

After much consideration, I'd go for option 1. If you could spend a bit more on a Z68 motherboard or even a P67 then I'd go with that.

CPU, GPU are both much more powerful and the 4GB RAM will be plenty for gaming and general use.

The other option is good if you want to make it as simple as possible, but performance wise it will probably fall short.
