Looking for cheap or free web hosting, who??

Out of interest what could be considered 'wrong' with the site?
It seems to be simple and straightforward. I am not a fan of 'gloss' on websites even though it seems to be the thing on big corporate sites.

  • Textured background. While being ghastly to look at also affects the clarity of words placed directly on top
  • Serif font for no particular reason
  • Terrible choice of font colours, again, not the best for clarity (red on green?!)
  • Navigation not clear and nestled within the main body content
  • Completely unclear purpose. Is it for a lake or fly fishers? The website address and main image says one thing, everything else another
  • WALL OF TEXT. Usability absolutely shocking due to the 3-4 pages of text on the opening page
  • Massive mixture of font sizes, colours and style on the whole for no apparent reason
  • An animated GIF!
  • Incorrectly-placed JS popup
  • Terrible back-end code

That and the website generally looks terrible, and as said, a flashback from the 90s with geosites and AOL member pages. Just because your user base is old doesn't mean you can't embrace web2.0 even just a little bit. Just use Wordpress and get a theme, really not that hard. Much easier than creating what you have for this I guarantee it.
 
Vidahost +10. They've taken care of all our hosting for 4 years now. Highly recommended. R1Soft backups so you can get back any file, should you accidently delete it, Nginx for efficient server running, and are always on hand to help should you require any specialist assistance.
 
godaddy is pretty good if you don't mind ad based, buy the .com for a couple of quid and they throw in the hosting,

They put a little banner at the top of the pages but I only really used it for hosting images so it didn't make a difference to me,

Now i'm with qiq, much faster than any other host I have been with and really good customer service
 
Depends what you need, as I paid £25 or £30 a year "cant remember which one" which included basically everything, Unlimited MySQL Databases, Unlimited Mailboxes, Unlimited server space, Unlimited bandwidth, my own .com domain + .co.uk domain, shared SSL, unlimited subdomains, PHP, basically the full whack. Used em for 2 years not a single problem nor a single price hike
 
Cannot reccomend Vidahost enough. Never had anyone with quite such good customer service, web hosting or any other product.
