My friend has a Athlon II x4 in a micro atx case, it was from a local small system builder. I noticed his temps were very high and I want to get him a good cooler but there doesnt seem to be very much room in the case.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I have no idea, he doesnt live that close to me. Last time i was up there i noticed his temps were about 50c idle. He isnt going to overclock and he is a total noob at this sot of thing. I am not going to pay for a H50 to cool at stock speeds tbh.

I was going to give him my ocz vendetta 2 but it doesnt look like it will fit in there.
I guess I will just try some better thermal paste and see if that helps.

Freezer 13 and Xtreme (dosn't look small in the pictures, but its only 130mm tall).

+1 For a stock Athlon II quad, you don't need to go overboard. Just pick something reasonable in the £12-£25 range. Don't forget to make sure there is good contact between the cooler and the CPU's heatspreader, and that the thermal solution has been applied well.

Small, cheapish cases can be a tad cramped, so have a look for as many ways to increase airflow and remove heat pockets as you can. Slapping on an additional case fan, if possible, is also a good idea, especially if the gpu is pumping heat directly up toward the CPU socket (e.g. fan is not a blower design).

Thanks, That looks like the sort of thing that would do. I am sure a bit of cable mangement wouldnt go amiss. I couldnt cope with a case that small myself.
