Any recommendations? Looking for something cheap, quiet and low profile... I run Kodi and stream non compressed bluray rips. Possibly looking at 4k in the future...

Gigabyte GT 1030 2GB Low Profile. I've been using this card for almost 1 year. Great quiet card that even handles esport gaming etc.

Funnily enough, it's a 5450 that I need to replace. I'm having trouble with Kodi and think its due to the lack of up to date drivers for this card...

Ahaha!

It was the ideal media centre card - the only replacements I've seen are huge heatsink fanless ones and they're much more expensive.

If it's running a linux-version of Kodi then support was dropped for the proprietary driver a few years back - for a long time it was the lowest card supported by amd's proprietary linux driver.

AMD 5450 HD - no fan, can do HD.

4k is probably beyond it though.

I've been using the Sapphire Radeon HD 5550 Ultimate in my HTPC since early 2011. But I've had to replace my CPU and board after the mouting bracket on the heatsink (Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro) snapped and fried the CPU (Q6600).

The whole system was due a replacement as any web browsing with lots of media (YouTube and eBay) was sluggish and I couldn't play any 4K media in MPC-HC or Plex (direct or transcoded).

Replacing with a Ryzen 2200G system which arrives today.

@Jed Shields, if you want to give the HD5550 a try drop me a trust and you can have it for free + postage.

I use a 1050ti in mine, but thats with a bit of mild gaming to. If you want to view 4k you want to get a 4/5 series AMD or a 10 series Nvidia.

Very kind offer. Unfortunately I'm having trouble with the rest of the system and I think I'm long overdue a complete upgrade. How are integrated graphics nowadays? Or would I still need to look at a separate card?

For regular HTPC duties the GeForce 1030 is hard to beat; 4K, 8K, HEVC, HDR, DP 1.4, HDMI 2.0b, HDCP 2.2

MSI do a low profile passively cooled model which has both HDMI and DisplayPort outputs.

The AMD RX550 has a similar spec but requires active cooling.

The 5450 is a great card to stick in a drawer & use for troubleshooting - they're small, no fan & don't require external power.

Don't get rid of it! :p

There is a problem with Nvidia cards and HDR. 10bit 4:2:2 is totally broken and 10bit 4:2:0 isn’t available at all. You are left with 12bit 4:2:0 which gives colour banding and some colours are off (pink clouds in some films etc.).
I don’t know how AMD cards are doing tho.
