I’m building cheap pc for the living room, for 1080p and VR gaming. I have got an i7 4970 and some cheap motherboard (can’t remeber the name) and it’s going in a Sugo SG11B case, I currently have an r9 290 from my previous build but I’m hesitant about putting such a hot running card in a small case, the 290 ran at 90+ in my previous case, a full size Phanton...
I have found a local(ish) store where they have a couple of 1060’s and 1070’s at normal prices. I aim to complete the build in a couple weeks when I have bought the remaining parts, (HDD, cooler and case)
My question is, what should I do about the gpu? Use the 290? Buy a 1060/1070 or hang on for NVIDIA’s new gpu’s?

I’m getting inpatient, I haven't gamed in over a a month, the longest I have gone, I need my VR fix ASAP!

Use the 290 and keep an eye on the temps until the new Nvidia cards are announced. Can you strip the 290 and put new thermal paste in there? that may help.
Pointless going out and spending more money on a 1060/1070 right now without trying out the 290 you already got first. If the 290 dies you can go out and get the 1060/70 if you cannot wait a few months, that is.:D

Is the 290 a reference/blower model? If so, sure it'll get hot but there's a chance it won't make the other components inside the case as hot as a non-reference card. Can you use software (Afterburner etc) to set a temp limit like 80C? Would do that and wait for new Nvidia reference/FE cards to arrive.
