i have i got arcam dac + beyer A20 but the cabling is doing my head in would like an all in one soloution for mic/headphonesSo use the HD700s with a modmic and get a decent dac/amp combo for your desk.
While HD700's frequency response isn't that hot looking for binaural sound with that major 1-6kHz dip that doesn't change the fact that audio makers simply don't make much any headsets aiming at good sound reproduction.
Though for communication purposes they make plenty based on closed headphones.
You could likely count those open headsets with remaining fingers of one hand of Chinese fireworks factory's worker...
Though there's way to to avoid separate cable of ModMic.
V-Moda BoomPro mic could be used be in AKG K712 with this adapter:
BGS 3 Pin Mini XLR Female to 3.5mm Female Stereo Headphone Jack Adapter with AKG Wiring.
In binaural soundstage K712 is basically there with super competitive (also detachable cable) K702, fun bass just makes foot steps and such less obvious.
Though those AKGs come also with coiled cable and you could just put ModMic's cable inside that coil.
Also Beyerdynamic makes similar boom mic meant for their Custom One Pro headphone.
(closed can likely based on DT770 just like MMX300 so big no compared to open goodness)
If binaural sound isn't familiar try these:

Though those rely really heavily on headphones capabilities for good immersion.
MMX300 is DT770+mic at expensive special product pricing.tbh i was high considering just buying MMX300's what your thoughts on this?
MMX300 is DT770+mic at expensive special product pricing.
While DT770 apparently has really decent soundstage for closed can of its price with good positional accuracy, it's still closed and with closed design's heavy bass drowning details.
Except for good lower bass would likely sound rather bad after my DT990, K702, K712 and (retired) HD595 collection.
And just don't see any reason for more bass than in DT990 or K712.
I mean where's even fun if you can't anymore distinguish other sounds from bass?
Maybe if needing closed design's external sound isolation might go for DT770 + some minus dBs in equalizer for bass.
Beyond that don't see reason to give up open goodness.
And I think HD700 should be plenty good enough for closed cans to sound like putting head into some barrel/cabinet.
With cheap closed garbages those linked videos have immersion of head in bucket underwater:
Whole immersion is vague and there's no sense of depth/distance, some sounds are just more muffled than others.
Binaural sound with headphones fit for it rises headphone gaming immersion to different level.
Would be also nice to have more binaural music:

K712 definitely has more fun sound with that above neutral bass in there.I had the K702 before, i sold it it was nice but wanted a little more.
Do you have multimeter (or better, scope) to check power supply?Today my Setup Died, (Arcam NO power) so went and got a "replacement" Going to see if i can repair the Arcam, i think its only power related.
K712 definitely has more fun sound with that above neutral bass in there.
Though didn't really compare with music, just with binaural game sound.
And stereo game sound of course sucks compared to binaural sound...
Even more than with DT990 (or HD595) because difference between it and binaural sound is bigger.
So unless going for some software soudn card is also needed for good gaming immersion.
That Beyerdynamic A20 apparently has ancient 100 ohm output impedance, so if you used that with K702 damping factor sucked.

After that it goes harder, unless fault is in power switch.
Except for capacitors it's all surface mount components and any measuring/probing needs accuracy:
https://musicmag.com.ua/arcam-irdac.html
well the unit never was turned off had it running for good 2 yearsODAC+O2+K702 sure ticks all the boxes for max analytical sound without giving give any extra enjoyment than present in original signal...
If that Arcam is older and your friend is more into electronics hobbying might be also good to check insides for what capacitors it uses.
Who knows if its power supply died straight away or before that produced increasing ripple which would stress especially lower quality capacitors.
