Looking for help with upgrade please

Hi,

Looking for some help and advice please.

My current system is groaning and creaking a bit under the weight of the latest AAA games (my pc is mainly used for gaming) and I am thinking about upgrading it in some way to try and improve my frames per second, smoothness etc etc.

I 'try' to build my systems to get the best bang for my buck from each component and hope that they will be future proof (as much as anything can be).

My current system specs are: (system was last upgraded about 2 to 3 years ago)

CPU: I5 4679K @ 3.40
MOBO: Gigabyte Z87X-D3H (with a Noctua NH-D14 heatsink)
RAM: 8GB DDR3 @ 1000Mhz
GFX: MSI R9 280X 3072MB
MONITOR: BENQ XL2411T Gaming monitor 144Hz

I have 2 samsung evo ssd hard drives, 1 has my OS on it(an 840 EVO) and another is set up with my games(an 850 EVO).
Soundblaster soundcard.

All of my components are running at stock.

I was thinking that the best upgrade I could make with the biggest impact would be my graphics card, but I am unsure if I will just move the bottleneck to a different area and should therefore be looking at something else?

Given that I am right and the graphics card is what I should be looking to upgrade first i reckon the 480X or the 1060 would prob the way to go for me.
As far as I can tell the 1060 does perform slightly better at the moment but as I am looking to buy something that will last for a few years I was thinking the 480 would be the way to go.

So was thinking about this card:

or perhaps something similar?

What I am looking for is any kinda feedback or advice you can give me in any area, as you can tell I am not the most clued up about this kind of thing and would appreciate any help you can give me.
Is it the right component, is it the right card, best value for money etc?

My budget is such that I could manage the 480/1060 but wouldn't be able to stretch too far beyond that value for the time being.

Thanks a lot in advance for any help, cheers ;)

A 480 or 1060 would be a good choice. I'd probably lean towards these models for price/performance:

I'd also look into overclocking your CPU as well. To start off with, just alter the multiplier in the bios (simply changing one value) and then keep an eye on the temps with something like HWMonitor. If you need any help, just hop over to the CPU or General Hardware sub-forums. :)

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £179.99
(includes shipping: £0.00)

If you want to keep costs down and dont mind 4GB over 8Gb along withs costs and should last for 1080p gaming .

Found mine not as loud as the sigma the card picked up for being loud, what wasnt stated unlike others such as MSI is that VRM, RAM and Chip is all cooled under the main Heatsink, VRM temps are about 10% cooler then rivals that dont cool the VRM directly :)

Overclock the CPU, look around for another 8GB of matching ram (I grabbed 32GB/1600 for £80 about a year ago) and hold off for the RX570/80 launch.

Thanks very much to all of you that replied, your help and advice has been great. :D

Given all that has been said I think I will pick up a 480 an 8Gb version, appreciate the advice that I would be ok with the 4Gb version but i like to leave a little headroom if it will up the chances of the card remaining useful for longer. (@Wrinkly thanks mate for the advice but from the little I can tell my problem lies more with the graphics card than my cpu or memory for now at least ;) Depending on how much cash I have i might pick up some older ram)

I will also look into overclocking my cpu a bit, I have dabbled with it in the past but have also ended up going back to stock as I found I caused more problems than I fixed.:p

Thanks again to you all folks;)
