Built myself a new i7 system a few months ago with 6Gb of RAM and the 64 bit version of Vista. Been running fine for months but all of a sudden last week the following happens;

' windows explorer has failed to start' then restarting, then the first, etc. in a loop.

A quick google on the web, and it seems to have been a common problem with vista in the start oin some builds but not now.

So start in safe mode i think and sort it out, but the same thing happens in safe mode....uhh oh i go...lets restore then to yesterday when it worked. so dig out the installation dvd boot from that and off we go all the way through to system restore....then restore to yesterday...and bugger same thing happens, and if i restore to last week or month. same thing.

So it doesn't appear to be a problem with the Vista install and when I tried to close stuff down i get an alert of .../../sysadmin/desktop is not a valid location or something like that. I'm wondering if the hard disk has died on me or if it is worth trying a full install of vista onto the system and what that would do to the data on the drive?

Alternatively I have a spare hard drive that i could install as a new c: and install vista onto with the original drive in the system as a second drive...or would that cause problems as it already has vista installed.

Any ideas gratefully received?
