last night i started to think about building a system for flight sim 24. im not a big fan of that game anymore, but its on game pass and id like to build a system for it as i also want to build a racing sim too. just something different to what i usually build. I have been having a look around at parts and also some brief youtube videos, but i want it to be a budget flight sim machine with components that fit in between the min & rec system requirements.

I said budget, but i havent decided on a build cost, so at this point its irrelevant. im just interested to know what you guys would come up with as the in-between system if it was you building it?

being flight sim, it'd have to be an x3d cpu...just looks at the 7800x3d vs the 14900k. the 7800x3d absolutely destroys the intel cpu...
so choice then becomes do i just want a budget machine that'll do without upgradeability, in which case I'd go am4, b550 mobo, 5700x3d and 32gb 3200c16/3600c18 ram. I'd pair that with an nvidia gpu as dlss works very well and being a slower game frame gen also works well. that's it though..end of life platform so no upgradeabilty

or

if funds don't stretch there yet, get a b650 board and pair it with a 7600 cpu, 32 gb 6000c30 ram with same nvidia gpu....I probably wouldn't go below a 4070super though..FS2024 still demanding...the 7600 is still a great gaming cpu with an allround performance similar to the 5700x3d, maybe a bit ahead, but it'll loose to the games that love the cache of the x3d...you get upgradeabilty though, so you'll have ability in futre to drop a 7800x3d or 9800x3d in...couple years probably the 11800x3d if you hold out..as a guide the the 5700x3d is 6 to 10% slower than the 5800x3d (so could get that but expensive), 7800x3d is 21% faster than the 5800x3d(39% faster in the 1% lows), and the 9800x3d is 11% faster on av than the 7800x3d

so you'll have an order of magnitude upgrade path going am5 route

but all come down to budget

oh, and if going am4, I'd only look at 2nd hand..if buying new I'd 100% go am5

thanks for reply.

Unlike my usual builds i will do this one gradually rather than all at once. I plan to get the flight controllers as well and not just build the system. Your insight is very interesting, so i will take those into consideration.

I was probably going to look at intel as i havent done an intel build for awhile and as i just want this as a sort of budget sim setup with a spec of either mix or an inbetween spec between the minimum and recommended requirements then im not worried about upgrade paths, it will be built strictly for flight sim. Maybe hook my meta quest 2 if Microsoft ever incorporate VR

in my personal rig Im only using an rx 570 4gb with my 5900x for now, but with 16gb ram i already meet the minimum sort of, so i will use that as a starting point to test the game then build the other system round that performance upgrading where need to. Will certainly need an 8 core cpu for it.

I buy most my parts 2nd hand although the a520 is the only used part in the 5900x system with everything else being new, so i will have no issues going that route. it will all depend on value for money.

Second what is said above, MSFS 2020 and 2024 both see a huge benefit from the 3D V-Cache on the X3D CPUs.

If you are not worried about an upgrade path, then used AM4/5800X3D would be a good choice. However, work the figures and see if you can stretch to AM6 as it would be the better investment in the longer run, especially if you don't change platform that often.

thanks for the reply.

To be fair my own personal system uses an a520, so i dont even know about the am6 stuff, but i will look into it especially as that system has a 5900x, so might be better for myself as well as a 2nd system.

I am currently selling a cheap gaming system with a ryzen 2600 and 16gb ram and to make that suitable for MFS i would need a new graphics card as its got an R9 380 installed, so if i dont sell it then i could probably turn that one in to the MFS system instead as a starter. it does have an a320 board, but i havent found a decent priced b450 yet.

Your personal rig is fine the 5900x is a solid chip all you really need to do is get a decent GPU and maybe upgrade the memory to 32gb.

If your set on a second system most a320 motherboards support 5000 series CPUs like you 5900x and the x3d models with a bios flash.

Check the CPU support list for that board.

I'm playing MSFS24 on a 5800x, AMD 7900xt, 64gb RAM.

Runs fine.
7900xt isn't extactly a budget gpu either though...i've got a 5800X also, and a 7800x3d. There's a bit of a difference.... below closest i could get to a 7900xt performance wise...a 3090ti, paired with a 5800x and 7800x3d...you're leaving a lot of performance on the table there. and flight sim is know to love x3d(shame they don't have below)
