Hey all, I realise some of this may seem overkill, it is however mainly for future-proofing rather than anything else, so up to now I have decided on the following...

Intel Core i7-3930K 3.20GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - Retail

Asus Rampage IV Extreme Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard ** Free ROG 16GB USB **

Corsair AX1200i Digital ATX '80 Plus Platinum' Modular Power Supply (CP-9020008-UK)

GeIL EVO Veloce Hot-Rod Red 32GB (4x8GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Quad Channel Kit (GEV332GB2400C11AQC)

Corsair Force GS 180GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CSSD-F180GBGS-BK)

Corsair Graphite 600TM Midi Tower Mesh Windowed Case - Black

Corsair Hydro H100 Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366/LGA2011/AM2/AM3) (CWCH100)

LG BH10LS38 10x BluRay-RW / 16 x DVD±RW Lightscribe Drive - Black (OEM)

Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 32MB Cache WD10EALX - OEM x2

Akasa BayMaster Card & Drive Reader (AK-ICR-10)

I really like the Case so +don't want to change that if I don't have to+

Not sure on the RAM, even 16GB might be OK and upgrade more later...

Unsure whether the Mobo will fit OK, also like the look of the Sabretooth board..

The cooler is a stop-gap for me to sort out a proper water cooling system, then it will be used on an old PC .

Storage..I need advice, 2x SSD? One for O/S (Win7 don't like Win8 at all) one as cache then the 2 big mechanicals in RAID0? Or will one O/S-Cache do?

Also the smarter of you will see no Gphx cards, I am put off the GTX690 somewhat as I figure there's more to go wrong on it, if I got 2 GTX680's and one died then things are simpler and far less expensive, I'm also very, very wary of nVidia Gphx cards as I've had a few die on me previously. All my ATi's are still going strong, so I was thinking throw a single 7970 in there for now as a stop-gap until the 8**** show up and then Crossfire them?

Thanks for any advice or thoughts :)

What's the intended usage?

It does look like overkill. Future-proofing never works in my experience, better to spend a moderate amount now and take advantage of the new platforms when they’re released.

It'll be used quite heavily for games + fraps/Youtube Stream, but also a lot of photography manipulation and video editing/encoding stuff, some 3D modelling (Vue and Maya) and a dabble with Reason when I'm in the mood, not forgetting of course streaming multi-channel HD porn! :D

Things like the RAM and PSU are very overkill tbh but I figure they'll last me happily through a few platform changes, I was looking at the 3770K + 1155 Mobo but decided to go with the 2011 for the same reasons, hoping this set up will take me through for about 3yrs perhaps only upgrading the CPU and GPUs if I need to.

If you have use for the extra cores then s2011 makes sense.

The PSU is still a very expensive piece of overkill. You’ll at least be able to get a bit of welding in during your spare time.

You don't mention an OS, but you will need a Professional licence to use 32GB.

I've already mentioned the PSU is overkill, I'd rather have a quiet 1200w in there at 40% than a noisier 850w in there at 80% if that makes sense!

The O/S will be Win7Pro 64. I don't think the Geil 32GB will cause any problems with compatibility w/mobo, and the x79 from what I've read wont hinder any overclocking if I double that up to 64GB in the future filling every slot.

I'm more concerned with the E-ATX mobo causing possible problems in the 600T, although I don't think it will cause any.

And the SSD/HDD configuration, I can get 2x SSD no problem but I'm uncertain whether there would be any benefits?

1 SSD with O/S (cache?) + 2 HDD (Raid0)

or

2 SSD one O/S and one cache + 2 HDD (Raid0)

or even 2x SSD O/S(Cache) (raid0) + 2 HDD (Can I also raid0 these or would it have to be a different raid config?)

Maybe I'd be better off asking in the other forum for the storage advice?
