Hi folks,

My partner needs a new monitor, she's currently got a pair of similar but not quite identical, nothing-fancy 1080p IPS panels from ASUS, something like a VX279Q and a VX279H. We were playing Ark Survival the other night and she noticed that my screen, a Benq EW3270U was showing much more detail in the dark, making the night-time parts of the game much more playable. It's an HDR VA panel and I think it's great, though by all reviews the HDR is not as amazing as it could be.

She has an MSI 2070 Super card so ... we're probably looking at fantastic 1440p performance but not so great at 4K, plus at 27" 4k isn't going to make a lot of difference over 1440p AFAICT. It has to be 27", or thereabouts, because we're only looking to replace one screen and she wants the sizes to match. There's not really room for two 32"monsters there, replacing both would be expensive, and apparently my set up of a 24" 1920x1200 screen next to a 32" 4k panel is just weird....

Either g-sync or g-sync compatible freesync would be useful. HDR is a must. Budget is around £400, less would be good. VA preferred, IPS considered, TN is probably out. High refresh rate is interesting but not a must have.

So .. any suggestions?

So far I've identified the Samsung CHG70, though I'm not sure she wants a curved monitor next to a flat one, and the LG 27GL850 here at OCUK, but both of these are quite a bit more than I was looking to spend.

So ... what am I missing? Is there a good flat Samsung QLED? A 27" non-TN gsync panel that's a decent price I've missed? Should we just go 4K anyway as some of the 4K options actually seem to be cheaper? Is IPS as good as VA for the dark scenes? Why am I not finding many 27" VA panels anyway?

Halp?

You should definitely go 27" 1440P but going non-TN might be tricky. You can go Freesync, remember the LG 27GL850 is GSync compatible, its not Gsync.

The Dell 2716DGF is under £400, 1440p 155hz but its a TN panel, a good TN panel, but its TN and i think has banding issues in dark scenes (like my Dell 2716DG)

There is the Samsung LC27JG50QQNZA, it is less than £300, VA, but has no adaptive sync and there are some issues in reviews i've read.

Just under £400 is the Acer Nitro which is IPS 144hz Freesync: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/acer...-widescreen-led-gaming-monitor-mo-141-ac.html

Huh, I actually meant AG273QCX, but it looks like there is an AOC AG273QZ, which is a flat, 1440p, VA panel, HDR, Freesync 2, 27" monitor...

Now trying to find the catch, because that seems to be what I want, and that can't be right!

(Edit - and there it is! The monitor hasn't actually gone on sale yet!)

That Samsung's "QLED" is similar marketing BS as their "x-bit" MLC drives.
LCD is still same old LCD, no matter if backlight is incandescent bulb or even campfire.
True quantum dot LED monitors are hopefully couple years away.
(manufacturing should be pretty similar to OLED, whose problem is that organic part)
HDR is really another pile of marketing doing nothing to correct LCD's biggest problems.
(achieving sunglasses needing brightness has never been problem for LCDs)

IPS can't match VA's contrast and hence black value.
That makes VA superior in dark/dimly illuminated environment, even if manufacturers put back A-TW filter into IPS panels to avoid brightening of black from angle knowns as "IPS glow".
Though VA is far from perfect and its high contrast/dark black comes with drawback.
Horizontal gamma shift causing "black crush" causes challenges for differentiating darkest shades:

Also IPS has faster and especially lot more consistent response times, with VA having "challenges" in darker shade transitions.

LCD is simply big pile of slimy compromises, no matter which one you take.
