(is the decent oblivion the elder scrolls one?)

Oblivion is a very good game, totally open ended and not at all very linear, a massive game.

You've also got:

Knights of the Old Republic, one of my favourite games of all time, the best Star Wars game, great story, acting and atmosphere. Then once you've completed that, Knights of the Old Republic II. Though a little dated nowdays graphically, it's still looks fantastic when you've got ~ 8 lightsabres flailing around between your group and enemies :p

Not really an RPG, but more of an adventure game: Fahrenheit, great story, just generally great game, though a little linear, and quite short, but very well made.

KOTOR, Oblivion etc are all single player only.

Multiplayer RPGs you'll be wanting something like:
World of Warcraft
Eve
Guild Wars

etc

FPS:

Call of Duty / Call of Duty 2
Quake 4
Unreal Tournament 2004

so which is the newest - eve, guild wars and WoW

which one would you recommend?

looking for good gfx adn a game thats not impossible to pick up!!

I've not played any of the MMORPGs, but World of Warcraft is probably the best overall I think though MMORPGs really aren't my kind of thing, I dislike them quite a lot personally.

Eve is a space based game, more units and general ongoing war thing I think.

Guild wars is kind of like WoW I think, but it's there's no monthly fee like WoW/Eve, so that has an advantage.

Graphically I don't think any of them are anything special.

DaveyD, could you jump straight into KOTOR II or would you recommend playing the 1st one before hand?

You *can*, but I would seriously recommend you played the first one as:

a) KOTOR I is a better game overall
b) You'll likely ruin the main major twist in KOTOR if you were to go play it
c) You'll understand a lot more of what's going on with the whole backstory, the Jedi Civil wars, mandalorian wars, and all that which will just throw you in the deep end with KOTOR II
