Looking for New ISP - Question about Enta Resellers

Hi Guys,

I'm currently with Bulldog 1Mb package. Now my exchange and location to my exchange means i can only get a maxium of 2-2.5Mb download package.

The person I spoke to at Bulldog said i could get the Max 8Mb package from Pipex (since they own bulldog) for £10 per month which has no cap.

Reading these forums, everyone seems to be suggesting Enta Resellers. What exactly are these? and why are they so recommended as they seem both more expensive than places like Pipex and have a download Cap?

Why are Enta resellers so reccommended?

Thanks a lot

Edit: This is my exhange http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange.php?ecode=CMCUR

Pipex have a cap too, they just don't advertise it. They traffic shape too.

Enta are expensive if you want to download the internet in peak time, but if you can moderate your usage they're not that bad - at the end of the day you get what you pay for.

Enta resellers are what they say on the tin - people (one man bands and bigger) reselling internet connections from Enta. Some (UKFSN, ADSL24 etc) let Enta do all the work (support, billing, the connection itself), and provide some of the service themselves.

The main reason the Entanet resellers get recommended is that they're vaguely transparent when it comes to how they operate.

  • They tell you what the limits are and what the penalties for exceeding them are.
  • They tell you what their network capacity is in near real time and hence what speeds you can expect
  • They tell you when maintenance is going to occur, how long it's likely to take and who might be affected

I'm with UKFSN, have been for a while but I'm looking elsewhere. Speeds have been on the decline. I use my internet at the weekends mostly and speeds of 2mbs are probably the best you will get until the early hours of the morning. It was amazing up until the third quarter of last year. However I agree with the aforementioned, their tech support is great if you ever need to utilize it, very generous bandwidth allowances and no p2p throttling, sadly though they're probably the best in terms of ipstream services. LLU is in my area but it's only Talk Talk here so far :(

Persoanlly Enta resellers overall are better informed and overall have a better understanding of how broadband works and more importantly how to fix problems in near time and not 3 month time like bigger isp's! Some other Enta resellers are TitanADSL, Aquiss, Falconet.
or look here where yo can see some of them taking the majority of the top 10 spot http://www.ispreview.co.uk

Thanks for all your responses. I have a couple of follow ups.

Looking at pipex's homecall page on fair use etc, i can see reference to "traffic shaping" but no indication whatsoever about cap. What exactly is the minimum speeds that will be obtained by traffic shaping? For example if I look at UKFSN, they seem to have traffic shaping down to a minimum of 2Mb's per second too:-

http://www.ukfsn.org/betterbroadband.html

Is this a similar thing to pipex? The reason being since my max line speed is 2Mb then if pipex do shape traffic down from 8Mb to 2Mb then it won't effect me.

I am tempted by some of the 300GB packages offered by Enta Resellers, however if the negatives of pipex such as traffic shaping aren't going to effect me since my max connection is the min connection traffic shaping will enforce then it seems a waste of money paying double for the same connection. (if you get my drift)

The Enta speed thing isn't traffic shaping, it's a packet level anti-loss tool which slows everything for everyone to ensure good QoS when it's busy. Pipex's traffic shaping slows particular types of traffic regardless of the time of day or the network capacity and it will bring the speed down to significantly less than 2Mb.
