Looking for new monitor with component input

Hi all,

I'm new to the forums but not to OcUK.

Basically, I'm looking for a new monitor that has either component or scart inputs on the back, as well as DVI, as I'd like to be able to connect it to my Wii as well as my computer.

I currently have a Samsung SyncMaster 22" (can't remember the model number) which only supports VGA and DVI. I think it was one of the ones where there was A, B and C models and know one really knew what you actually got.

Anyway, I've been looking at 24" and 22" monitors. I would prefer a 24" as this would make the upgrade more worthwhile.

I've been looking at the Dell 2408WFP Link

However, the cost as well as the reported input lag problem have put me off this one.

I've narrowed it down to two. The Samsung T220HD Link

and the Hyundai W240D PVA Link

Now, I would prefer the 24" Samsung T240HD. However, I've only been able to find the T240 and NOT the T240HD, as the non-HD models don't support component input and the built-in Freeview is a plus. It does exist (I think lol) as I've seen it on a review site. My concerns for this monitor, though, are the wobbly stand and reported backlight bleed (which is noticeable and possibly increased by the gloss bezel).

The Hyundai seems great as its quite cheap (for a 24") and has all the inputs I need. I am a bit confused over the performance differences of TN and PVA screens. Also, what is the difference between the 240D and the 241D? For any owners of the Hyundai, the bezel looks quite thick. Is it 'overpowering'? Does it take over the screen?

Lastly, the Dell comes with a zero dead pixel warrenty/guarrantee. How do the Samsung and Hyundai models compare with this? My current screen has two dead pixels, and whilst not in the way, they are very annoying to see out of the corner of my eye.

I've got an 8800GTS 512 (will that be enough?) and will be using the screen mainly for gaming, movies and browsing. I'm not a huge gamer. I just play a bit of TF2 and CoD4 and some RPGs.

Many thanks

The hyundia is pretty good, I thought the bezel was quite slim lol. The 240 only differs from the 241 in so far as the 241 has a built in USB hub. I dont know what the dead pixel policy is with hyundia but mine came without any so I did'nt worry about it.

In gaming terms I play COD4 with a 512Mb 8800GT at 1920x1200, unfortunaltey no AA or AF but I dont find this a problem at that resolution, some may disagree so its only my opinion. I get ~100fps in normal play dipping to ~50fps during some intense firefights, which seems pretty respectable to me although I would like to upgrade my card to a 4870 if some cash comes my way.

Thanks for replying.

Did you have any dead/stuck pixels?

And I'll hopefully be upgrading my graphics card as well. Just need more money :p

Thanks eddielenton. Very informative.

I see you mentioned in that post that the TN model may be slightly better than the PVA when viewing it from the front? Or now that the TN is at V2, would it be any better than the current PVA?

sepulchre, did you experience any noticeable ghosting at all?

Also, anyone know if Hyundai offer a zero dead pixel guarantee/warranty? Whilst I've seen a lot of reviews saying there weren't any dead pixels, I just want to be cautious as I've had some on my current monitor from day one.

Any VA has more viewing angle than any TN.
Fault is in basic structure and that's why IPS was developed in first place. Then VA got developed for cheaper in-between alternative.
When looked from center upper edge is darker in TN, if you move upwards for removing that then black whitens in bottom:

VA's weakness is horizontal gamma shift of darkest colours but except with with fully even one colour image that doesn't show much unlike TN's change of colours which shows easily when you lean back or forward in chair.
IPS is free of that problem and has viewing angles closest to CRT from any of these backlighted LCDs.

The Hyundai doesn't support 480i (60 Hz) nor 576i (50 Hz) very well. The screen flickers. So I cannot recommend it for Wii.

Doesn't need to support 480i. With this Wii VGA cable you can play virtually all of the Wii games just fine. Only a couple of Wii games don't support 480p. None worth mentioning. Just make sure you set the Wii to 480p before you hook it up to the monitor.

It's true that almost every Wii game supports 480p.

But if you want to play Virtual Console games, then you can forget the Hyundai W240D.

Oh yeah, and the 480p is not that widely supported among Game Cube games. So you can't play those either.
