Hey peeps,

So with new ryzens and nvidia coming around I started getting the munchies for new hardware. You know how it works

So I opened the case and had a look at what's there and here's what I found.
  • CPU i7-6700k
  • MOBO MSI Z170A PRO
  • GFX ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 8Gb
  • PSU Corsair RM750 Gold
  • RAM 16GB G.Skill DDR4 PC4-25600 3200MHz Ripjaws V Black CL14 Dual Channel kit (2x8GB)

All sitting in a big box (Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ATX) and outputting to 2K 120hz screen (Asus MG279Q)

I know some of you can spot the weak link in a setup like this, so where would you put your money in next to get the best bang for the buck?

I'm a casual gamer, will definitely give Cyberpunk 2077 a shot. Do you think I should be looking at a MOBO/CPU upgrade, or a GFX upgrade?

Thanks for all the suggestions!

It looks fine. Nicely balanced. You didn't mention HDD or SSD which is an obvious choke point. When you get cyberpunk and want to run it at higher detail, your psu and ram are fine.

6700k isn’t that much of a slouch, still a pretty decent CPU. I reckon could be worth throwing a 3070/3080 GPU in there dependent on budget.

Then later on if ££ permits, maybe upgrade to a Zen 3 cpu/mobo/ram kit. You could probably get away reusing the RAM too actually.

Do you have a decent SSD/NVME?

Ah sorry should have mentioned:
HDD Sabrent 1TB Rocket NVMe PCIe M.2 2280

I think the budget would be around the price of 3080.

I would wait and see.

Most here will suggest AMD cpu in most circumstances and the next gen is incoming.

Similar for graphics, nvidia reviews next week with debatable availability and amd to follow soon after.

Edit : plenty of new info and prices to come, with time to assess and buy what is actually available before cyberpunk launch.

Cyberpunk release 19th Nov thereabouts I believe?

May as well wait til end of October, see what AMD’s RX6000 GPUs can do. Then decide if they have a well priced GPU to boot, or go for a Nvidia 3080 be my approach.

Think you could get away with a 6700k a little while longer maybe.

I have a 6700K also and had a GTX 1080 which I’ve since upgraded to a 2070 Super. At the moment I plan to wait and see how well (or badly!) CP2077 runs on my system before making any plans. That or if I’m weak a 3080, but the 6700K will likely be staying until there’s concrete benchmarks for Zen 3 and I can then decide what I want to do.

It will run fine. We are on the 1080p vs 1440p vs 4k bs even before we get to 50 or 60hz that our tellies do depending on region, never mind 120hz or 144. If you have amazing eyesight, the reflexes of a cat and a bottomless budget, then go for it. Most people really cant tell the difference. The increase in cost is exponentially higher than the increase in experience.

Edit : my bad. on a 32" monitor 1440 at normal distance is the minimum, 1080 is too low.

I run 3440x1440p Ultrawide so I’m hopeful that the 6700K will suffice. I’m pretty sure the 2070 Super will.

Yep 2070 suoer fine.
You could certainly pick up a 2nd hand upgrade for not much more than you sell yours for. I'm not familiar with the intel motherboards and cpu combos.

Someone smarter will come along.
