I'm looking for a gaming headset that's built like a tank. To be honest, as long as it is strong I don't much mind if it sounds like a tank too.

I've just broken what must be my fourth or fifth gaming headset in not much more than three years. They always fail in the same way: at the swivel hinge where the earpieces meet the headband. The swivel is usually fine, and made of something strong. The flaw is always that it goes into something made of flimsy plastic.

My young son plays games on the computer with me, so the headset gets some fairly direct treatment. It also gets swapped between a big head and a little head regularly.

Cost isn't an object. Sound quality isn't terribly important. I just want something that won't break after a few months of regular use.

Beyer dynamic DT 109 are probably the best built headset on the planet but I think they use the same drivers as the DT 100 headphones rather than the improved 150's and therefore lack any real bass. The newer DT 290's are fairly tough, but not quite to the same standards as the older 109 as they are made from a very tough plastic. (we use them in a studio environment and they survive quite well) A full set of spares are always available, meaning there is little that couldn't be fixed.

The biggest problem with these are that they probably require a power supply for the mic. (known as 48V phantom) They are also quite expensive, compared to "gaming" stuff. My pair of DT 294's are fairly old now but still in great shape and sound exceptional. (similar to 770's but with more mid range) The mic is also remarkably clear and being a hypercardioid design, doesn't pick up much in the way of external noise.

How about a pair of Beyerdynamic DT150 plus a desk mic?

The DT150 is pretty much bombproof and a desk mic should be safely out of the danger area :D
