I'm looking for a DLNA solution to pick up the media from my WD My Cloud and play back on my TV. I have a Bravia with DLNA enabled but the interface is utter guff. I've also tried Chromecast but can't find an app to act as a go between.

Plex would work well here, if you have a box than can stay on and act as a DLNA server.

Otherwise Kodi will read media off the NAS without the need for a DLNA server but you'll need a more powerful, client like an Android box.

If you don't want a beefier device as a server or client then you're stuck with a pants interface.

So my best option would be an android box then I could choose which app (Kodi or Plex)?

P.s. any suggestions on which box to go for?

Personally I'd go for an Amazon Fire stick as it's slick and easy. Native Plex app and Kodi is easily side loaded.
