I'd like to run an ethernet cable from the bedroom through one wall in to the living in order to connect my TV and Amazon FireTV to my PC (eventually a NAS).

I'm total DIY noob so i have no idea what takes to neatly drill a hole and install cable without just making a dirty great big hole.

If anyone has every done this before i'd greatly appreciate your advice, even if its to tell me not do it if i'm a noob (which i am) :)

Thanks

If you have no idea, it's worth asking someone who already has the tools and is willing to do it for you.

Depend on the type of wall, is it a solid wall?

If it's drywall, you can quickly cut out the size you want and fit a dryline backbox

Then a punchdown faceplate. http://www.netstoredirect.com/cat5e-modules/79-excel-cat5e-utp-rj45-loaded-faceplates.html

.

Or you could just do an 8mm hole and conceal the cable the best you can.

This thread may be better with pictures.

Typically you'll want an 8mm masonary drill bit.

I'm pretty sure its plasterboard, sounds hollow and sound passes through like it's not even there.

I'll take some pictures tomorrow when the light's a bit better.

Ta.

I'm actually thinking of getting an electrician to install a plug socket on the wall behind the TV since i'm having to run an extension cable/multi-plug bar half way across the room.

Do you know if most/any electricians can and will install network cables?

Electricians are like every other tradesmen you'll just have to ring until you find one. It's a relatively simple task though however you'll need a punchdown tool, Krone are best but if you're rarely going to use it then just get a Krone lookalike and get a cable stripper (I'm a fan of the cheap ones not the fancy ones)

What you could do is get the electrician to fit a pattress box in the wall on either side so they are back to back and then fit a brush plate type faceplate to both sides. Obviously there would be a hole in the back of each pattress box and you could then pass a few cables straight through the brush plate on one side and out of the other side.
