Hi all,

Im new here and I hope that some one will be able to help me in identifying where the bottle neck is in my system.

My system is as follows:

XFX 8800GTX Extreme Edition
Tagan TG900 PSU
Asus M2V Motherboard
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB)
AMD AM2 4600+
Maxtor 250Gb Sata HDD (7200rpm)
Windows XP Pro SP2

I believe there to be a bottleneck in this system because in 3dmark06 I score 6617 whilst a friend with a similar spec machine, Intel instead of AMD and 8800GT, is scoring near to 10,000.

Can anyone see an issue with my setup and tell me where I can get the best improvements in 3dmark?

Any advice is welcome as im not overly happy with spending £300 for the 8800GTX, Memory and PSU and then to be only scoring 1,500 points higher than my 7600 Ultra!!!

Cheers

Firstly,I can't help but wonder why a 3DMark score is so important? Does your system play games,or do whatever you want it to do without issue? If so then my advice would be 'Live with it'

Many a pound and hour struggling with system configs has been wasted in pursuit of a few points in benchmark software..only for the pc to perform almost exactly the same in everyday tasks. It is a horribly unsatisfying ethos that left me utterly unrewarded and ultimately skint.

Anyway, horribly patronising advice moment over ;) :D , I can safely point my patented FingerOfBlame© at your processor.Intels are staggeringly good at the moment. To get a better 3DMark score, buy a new motherboard and processor.

Hey,

Thanks for the fast reply :)

My reason for wanting a higher 3dmark score is because of performance in games. None of my games run smooth anymore. My 7600 Ultra used to run most of my games really well and I would never notice any jerkyness. With the 8800GTX im getting a massive improvement in FPS (on the same settings) but the games are no where near as smooth and that has just baffled me.

My friend is using what i believe to be the equivelent CPU, E6600, and only a bog standard 8800GT but is getting damn close FPS and much smoother gameplay. Surley the 8800GTX should be ripping his 8800GT to pieces?

Cheers

Yeah it will do providing it has a decent CPU to work with.CPUs have a lot of work to do in modern games.Plus it will have a lot to do with the motherboard you're using,RAM timings and which drivers you and you friend are using.

Having said all this,in my experience choppy framerates are mostly driver related. If you haven't already, try updating to the latest WHQL drivers from Nvidia.Make sure to go into the driver control panel to set required AA and AF levels, and check your memory timings..just to be sure.
