Hello

I've been kind of sitting on the side lines for a bit with audio and I'm looking to take it to the next level, so I have ordered a set of Sennheiser HD 6XX Headphones from a US based communal purchase site that's sold over 42,000 of these headsets that they have Sennheiser make for them.

It was far to tempting a punt considering that they are £160'ish if they make it through customs considering the HD 650's I can find on google are around £320.

From the reviews I have seen they are basically the Sennheiser HD 650 Headphones with some tweets items like the cables. From all accounts the HD 650's are a pretty good professional level headset that's fairly 'flat' according to some so they are good over sound range.

With this being said I have not looked in the DAC/Amp side yet and I'm looking for some advice on this from more experience people so that I can drive these correctly with my PC and some other kit that I will listen to music, TV and films on.

Any advice welcome

Cheers

From personal experience, I'm going to suggest you focus on the amp side first. I've owned both solid state and a valve headphone amp, and thought that the valve amp made a seriously good improvement.
The unit I had was a Little Dot iv, but there's other options out there. Sold mine for £150, so they're not killer expensive.

I had the chance of purchasing the headset at this price now as it only lasts for 9 days more so I took it for the now, I can wait until I find a good DAC and amp. But I was looking for advice to direct me to some good products.

You probably don't need to spend gobs of money to get a good sound out of them. I bet a MBPr could, for example, drive these perfectly fine, and offer excellent sound quality.

The bottlehead crack is meant to be a good partner for the 650 as is the little dot.

I had a pair with my stx essence which sounded nice but I have to admit to preferring the akg k712 pro

I have 6XX picked up in the same way and using them for gaming & music with a magni 2 amp and modi 2 dac from Schitt and very happy with the results.

Magni 2 has now been superceded by v3 which is reportedly even better.

See if you can get this thread shifted into soundcity to get more input.

Sennheiser 600/650 benefit hugely from lots and lots of voltage and generous slew rates - they do not need an amp which can supply a lot of current and infact those amps can sometimes be detrimental to getting the best performance out of the 600 series.

I'd also give a balanced amp a consideration as the 600 do noticeable gain from it - though it doesn't fundamentally change their performance.

Unfortunately I can't easily recommend any one amp as I gave up in the end and built my own and some people really like how they sound off tubes and some don't - some of the best for actually getting those drivers working are tube amps.

I was looking around for a Desktop Amp for when my Audeze LCD2-C come. I do have the Magni 3 and M/F v90 dac. Ill be keeping my Dac as i love the sound. Just not sure on the Magni 3 yet as not tried it but its suppose to be great for the money. I know there's better out there but the Magni is perfect size for my Desktop most are way to big
