Hi guys,

Im new to the forum, I decided that its time to upgrade since I want to play BF3 and my q6600 and 4870 don't seem to be enough.

I was thinking of getting either the i5 2500k or the i7 2600k. What do you guys think? Is i7 overkill?

Also could you match me a good motherboard and RAM to match the cpu and that can be overclocked.

I'm thinking of getting a graphics card too. Thinking of NVIDIA maybe going to try 3D gaming.

Do you think I can keep my PSU? Its 2 years old 750w OCZ.

I usually build pcs myself as a hobby but been out of it for some years and don't know the latest hardware. I hope I'm not asking too much.

Thanks a lot for your time

Actually what motherboard you got with your current system? If you can just overclock your Q6600, it would mean that you will have more money for the graphic.

Upgrading from Q6600 to SandyBridge would provide improvement in games, but not nearly as much as graphic upgrade. If you can overclock you Q6600, you should be fine with graphic up to GTX570/6970 range cards.

Might aswell post in this forum, i need better performance in recent /upcoming games

current specs are

AMD phenom 2 X4 965 Processor 3.40 GHz
4 gb of ram
radeon hd 5770

play at 1680 by 1050 on a 20 inch monitor

Battlefield 3 and skyrim, how well would a 6950 go with my set up ?

Tried the battlefield 3 beta and i get pretty low fps.

if i were to go for a i5 2500k could i keep my current motherboard and ram etc ?

Or changing the graphics card give me a good improvement ?
Would changing the GPU bottleneck my phenom processor ?

i5 2500K is for Intel socket 1155, so no it won't be compatable with your current AMD socket AM3 motherboard...so you would have to get a new motherboard as well. The RAM however can be reused since it is still the same dual-channel DDR3 ram.

But if I was in your position, I would just grab a GTX560TI 2GB/6950 2GB and replace the 5770. They are nearly twice as fast as the 5770, and even faster when you overclock them. But you have to check to make sure if your PSU is good enough for these new cards. If the motherboard is decent, I would grab a 3rd part CPU cooler and overclock the Phenom II X4 965BE to something like 3.8GHz.

was on caspian border there using fraps getting 22 fps at low graphic settings, thats pretty bad, , think i may get a 2gb 6950 with the extra vram i heard it helps battlefield 3 and see how it runs when the game is released, and possibly go i5 next year if im still getting bad frames, best idea ?

TBH that cpu can be overclocked easy to 3.8-4.2 system dependent ofc. Also What motherboard do you have as bulldozer iis due on a couple weeks. You may have an AM3+ motherboard I know some AM3 boards are compatible with a bios upgrade.

I say oc yer cpu get a better graphics card and wait. Early reports saying bulldozer are going to be great cpu's and AMD tend to cater more for people on budgets.

The 965 that you have is a dam good cpu for the price and tbh with a better gpu should run battlefield no problems.

As said above, your processor is good and will not hold you back much at all.

If you find it does then you've got a graphics card to start a new build upon

hhmmm ok thanks for the help, what specs do u have ? you for playing the recent games yourself ? batman, bf3, skyrim, MW3 etc ?

Also is a 6970 worth considering over a 2gb 6950 ? i know with the higer end GPUs like the 6990, GTX 580 your talking big dollars then
