Looking for some OC pointers : DS4 & E6300

Hi, I just finished building my new system and started to overclock it a little, seems not too bad so far but as I'm new to these forums and overclocking in general I was wondering if anyone could give me a few pointers or some advice in general?

Here are some screenshots of some of my bios settings and a PI result along with temp. and CPU-z info, theres a few things I'm uncertain about. Firstly the timings on the memory dont look to good, they should be 4-4-4-12 t2, but with the bios settings as shown, they are nothing like that, I know how to change them in the bios but am unsure which settings relate to what timings. Secondly when sitting idle CPU-Z shows the multiplyer fluctuating between x7.0 and x6.0, is this normal? its set to x7.0 in the bios as you can see.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated :)

Try disabling 'CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)' and 'CPU EIST Function' in the Advanced BIOS Features. This worked for me, stays at 7x now.

I''m currently running at 3345mhz (478 x 7)

I had said in another post that my system wouldn't boot if the PCI Express Frequency was set to 100, but after a re-flash of the bios and a cmos reset i now can.. And all seems fairly stable at 478, 480 wasn't though.

My M.I.T settings are as follows.

CPU Host Frequency - 478
PCI Express Frequency - 100
CIA2 - Disabled
System Memory Multiplier -2.00
Dimm overvoltage - Normal
PCI-E - Normal
G(MCH) - +0.10
FBS - - +0.10
CPU Voltage - 1.40000

I have had to up the volts on the CPU to run at over 460 or so. I haven't changed the memory settings all left on 'Auto' let it make it's mind up, think i might have to change these if going to go higher, as anything 480 and above after 5 mins of Prime it just reboots.

CPU-Z reports the memory at 478 - 1.1 - 3-6-6-18

I'm using the G-Skill 2GB HZ kit, black spreaders. Which on the spec says CAS Latency : 4-4-4-5-15  What are each of the values  Is the motherboard making the timing tighter

I've tried 5,5,5,15. And upping FSB to 500 won't boot and reverts back to stock!

Tried 4,4,4,15 And FSB at 490 and got to Windows but then a BSOD, this was also with .3 on the Chipset, and staying at 1.40 on CPU.

Is 1.4 ok for the CPU, i have seen other people over at XS putting 1.45 in them, this ok?

At the moment 478 seems to be stable and with the memory on auto. which to be honest isn't that bad. ;) But i'd like to go higher!!!

Asgard - You still using stock voltage on cpu?

Daddyorchips - I'm using a AC Freezer 7 Pro, with the 'smart fan disabled in the bios so it's always at 2000rpm. Keeps the processor at around 50 when on load, and 43 idle, temps taken with coretemp, thats at 478 fsb

Also is there another app that can tell me the system temp, i don't beleive the Gigabyte Easy Tune.

By definitive do you mean original voltage...as I had that problem because I didnt know what it was, so was unsure how much I could add in the bios...

I used the gigabyte easy tuner thing. I set my DIMM volatge to Normal, then went to the gigabyte app, went to advanced overclocking and got the voltage.

Also, a question for you gigabyte users. When I set my timings in the Bios to 5-5-5-15, CPU-Z always reports 3-5-5-15. I can always set the last 3 but never the CAS. Now that my memory is at 900mhz + I feel i need to increase my CAS to get a better overclock but I cant. My CAS is always 3. Does anyone else have a similar prob or just me. I am not on a DS4, but a DQ6.

Cheers

Same problem on a DS4, bug in the bios I suspect and this will be killing high FSB

Thanks for the replies guys, Ive tried some of the settings suggested and overall everything is a lot more stable now. I dont seem to be able to get past 475FSB, which I'm not complaining about, whilst not as good as some of the speeds people are reaching, it's still a fairly decent speed increase imo. If I try to go any higher than this I get as far as the point where my desktop is about to be drawn onscreen and I get 'PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA' I'm not sure if I'm maxing out at 475FSB because my memory is only CAS4?? and as stated above, no matter what I set the bios to CPU-z reports RAM running at CAS3. Also on the plus side I have managed to tighten the timings up a little so they are now set and stable running at 3-4-4-12 :) . Once again thanks for your input and help.

Cheers,

Dusty.

I'm using the DQ6 and had the same problem, i've since flashed my BIOS to F3a beta version and it holds the CAS at 4 or 5 now whichever i set.

I found a link to the BIOS on XS forums, i'll try and find you the link if you want?

Hey Piel,

Any idea if your DQ6 will o/c these Conroes as well as the DS3/4 boards? Am thinking of picking up a DS4, but if the DQ6 is as able to o/c as well then for £20 more I may as well get that instead...

Cheers

At the moment i've got mine running stable at 350fsb

I'm taking it step at a time pushing it a bit further each night.

Not had any issues with crashing yet since i've been running the F3a beta driver so i'm hoping to get it as close to 3GHz as possible.

I'm using Arctic Freezer 7 Pro and my temps up till now haven't gone over 40.
