Hello all,
Just a bit of background:
I previously had a Virgin Media super hub in which i had a single ethernet going out to a belkin F5D8236-4 router. From this router I use the Wi-fi for my printer, and a steam link box (Not always on though.) Also connected to the belkin router are two computers via a wired connection ( I think with Cat5 cables, not entirely sure!), my own and my dad's.
I have had issues where the internet is very spotty, sometimes my download speeds will be through the roof and other times I can't even get youtube videos to buff or Chrome reports that there is 'no internet connection.' Several refreshes later it finds that there is a connection!
Recently I contacted Virgin regarding this and they noticed that the superhub was quite old so today I have received a new hub (Hub 3.0 i believe.) They also upped the speed a little as part of the deal. Other than the hub changing the setup is the same but the issues still exist.
I tried connecting my phone to the Belkin router and ran a speed test at around 50-60mbps, but then i ran one connected to the new hub at the speed ramped up much quicker and went to around 100-110 mbps...
My question is this; I can see that the best thing to do would be to just connect everything straight into the Hub 3.0 and ditch the router.. the problem is I have a cable that goes through the ceiling to connect to an upstairs computer and that isn't nearly long enough to reach the hub, what would be the best option?
Replace the belkin router with a 5 port gigabit switch?
Get one of those little female to female adaptors to extend the cable?
Use powerline adaptors?
Any advise would be great - I do get rather lost in the world of networking!
Thanks in advance!
Michael.
