Hello everyone,

I am looking to replace my current MOBO/CPU/RAM due to some faults that occurred, and would like to ask for some suggestions on what you think about the parts that I picked.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,858.30 (includes delivery: £0.00)

My budget is around 2.5k.

Then changes I would make:

AMD Ryzen 9 7900 Twelve Core 5.40GHz (Socket AM5) Processor - Retail - £439.99
Gigabyte X670 Aorus Elite AX (Socket AM5) DDR5 ATX Motherboard - £349.99
Corsair Vengeance EXPO 64GB (2X32GB) DDR5 PC5-44800C40 5600MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black (CMK64GX5M2B5600Z40) - £248.99
Alphacool Core Ocean T38 CPU Water Cooler - 420mm - £89.99

Grand Total: £1,136.95 (included delivery charge: £7.99)

Hi Tetras,

Thanks for your feedback.

Any reason for the changes? I would like to prioritize performance/longevity.

About the ACE: fundamentally it is still similar in function to other boards and you're paying a heavy premium for their highest-end. You can see that with how much they drop the price when they're not 'current' anymore. It does have better sound than the Elite, 10G LAN and the possibility of more M.2 slots (if 4 isn't enough..). I don't personally care about the VRM because the AMD CPUs don't seem to need that much, especially if you're not overclocking.

The 7900 non-X I like, because it is efficient and easy to handle (review), but obviously I can't say if you need the extra cores. I did consider an X3D, but I wonder if not having the cache on all cores could cause problems with your VMs.

The memory: 5600 C40 is obviously slower than 6000 C36 and it is not ideal, but if you're gaming at 4K the difference isn't that great and the more sticks you have, the lower speeds AMD CPUs seem to like, so I'm more concerned with capacity than speed and these sticks save you nearly £150.

Cooler: you're paying a premium for a high-end part again, similar to the ACE, at least £150 odd of that price is the RGB & LCD screen. It does perform well, but not enough I'd pay £200 more. The T38 results are included in this review, with the H170i Elite.

I did some minor changes best on some more research now. Managed to reduce the cost whilst still retaining a lot of the features/performance.

Obviously it is your money, but in terms of my feedback, those are not the kind of changes I had in mind :D

If you're only getting 32GB of memory, you might as well get 6000 C36 (or faster), I had assumed you needed 64GB or more for your VMs and may upgrade in the future (games don't need 64GB).

The X670E Hero, like the ACE, is another high-end board you pay a big premium over something like the TUF X670E.

The 32Gb was a typo :) Yes I need 64GB RAM, currently am trying out different combinations, and am also thinking of going with an Air Cool setup, just checking what fans will fit my case which is a

I think it says <155mm in the spec, if I have the right case, which would be quite restrictive.

After doing some more research, I think will settle for the following configuration:

Motherboard: Gigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX Motherboard AMD X670 Socket AM5
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X Processor 4.5GHz 64MB L3 Box
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR5 64GB (2x32GB) 5200MHz

Think this is a good price per performance per package.

RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR5 64GB (2x32GB) 5200MHz

In my eyes, that board is much better value than the Hero/ACE.

Are you planning to upgrade to 128GB? If you're not and that memory has a high CL rating, I'd try and get at least 5600, if it isn't much more money (doesn't matter otherwise).

Yes, I might upgrade to 128 GB later on. For the time being will stick to the selected RAM speed, the performance should still be overall great.

If you're not aware, you might want to watch this, which is the reason I say the speed doesn't matter if you're upgrading in the future.
