Looking for the best graphics card for 2 things

I want to get a graphics card that is 1. powerful enough to power the Dell Ultrasharp U3011 2. can play 1080p video at good quality.

In doing some research it seems that nvidia does best when it comes to compatibility with the various video formats, and AMD does best with video quality overall. I wish those two aspects could be combined into 1 card, but if I have to choose I would rather have compatibility with most of the different formats instead of having a card that is good in video quality but won't work with all the formats.

So the only question is which card is the best? But below gamer territory.
 
These days both of them have great quality and can hardware decode many formats.

If you are building a newer computer there's no reason to even buy a discrete card.
