Looking for the right motherboard for my storage build

Hello all,

I am currently trying to put together a box which will be quite storage intensive. I have a requirement for maximum CPU cores and fastest disks possible. I am looking at the ryzen 9 with maximum cores and threads and 2+ nvme disks with a total capacity of about 8TB. Could someone recommend a motherboard that can support multiple NVME disks which i can raid (I can soft raid as a backup if there are none available)

Thanks for the reply,

Here is my ideal target and budget:

ryzen with at least 12 cores
64gb memory
2 x 4 tb nvmes or 4 x 2tb not sure whats more feasible
everything else can be basic

If this can fit between 1500 - 2000 then should be sweet

A 4tb m2 is £500 and a 5900x is £500 so thats £1500 of your budget gone .

I think you being a tad unrealistic with your budget so you maye have to reevalute.

What gpu are do you want ?

Ok, so Threadripper is out. :p

Budget is tight! reckon will be near enough 2 grand, then need case and PSU and possibly a boot /OS drive?

MAG X570 TOMAHAWK WIFI - £220 (2 x M2 slots, will RAID 0 or 1)
Ryzen 3900X £400
4tb nvme £500
4tb nvme £500
nvidia GT 710 GPU £40 (needs one for Ryzen)
64GB Ram £300

£1960 so far (rough prices)

Thanks a lot for the input everyone heres the answers:

i think i can fit in 2k, no need for a GPU, I see a lot of these ryzen supported motherboards come with a HDMI output, thats all I need really

For what do you require the NVME speed? 2 x 4TB Sata SSD drives in raid would save £400
I need NVME disks for fast reads and writes, i am going to host an application on this box which needs to read and process data at high speeds

Yup, and how is it going to share what it stores ? Network? If so that’s your bottle neck, not the drives.
1Gbit is enough for this, it wont necessarily ship what it reads and writes so the throughput of the disk does not have a direct correlation with the throughput of the NIC

Yes i think i was a little bit hopefull with 1.5k :) but 2k is still acceptable, in terms of the case i dont need anything fancy really. I am curious what you mean by this nvidia GT 710 GPU £40 (needs one for Ryzen) can you explain? Most boards have a HDMI out which i just need for a basic monitor connection, will it work? This box will only really show the terminal only

One thing i really didnt consider and thats cooling, i would like it to be quiet so will probably add a few hundred for the liquid kit

What about the these? https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B550-AORUS-ELITE-V2-rev-10 i see these chipset Bxxx motherboards cheaper but with the same features, are they any good?

Not sure if i should go for the B5xx or the x570 chipsets are there any benefits to either?

I played around a little bit and i think i can fit into 2k with this board and CPU

Gigabyte X570 AORUS ELITE - Motherboard

AMD Ryzen 9 3900X - Processor

Cost cutting on the case, power supply only need 300w, and graphic card

X570 has more pcie lanes so you can run 2 x m2 pcie4 drives witbout impacting gpu performance.

B550 only has 1 m2 slot that runs at pcie4 speed the other m2 runs at pcie3 speed. Im not sure if the m2 supports raid it something you should check or others may confirm

The graphics situation is the same you need gpu.
