When photographing domesticated animals I need to be able to get up close to them, but 18mm on a crop doesn't always do it where large animals are concerned. Are there any reasonably priced wide angle lenses out there? Preferably with a large aperture.

The tokina 11-16 is good for the price
I've done shots where I've stood less than a foot away and got whole person in shot

Tokina is a good bet, I had a sigma 10-20 which is the best of the very cheap wide angles but I have since replaced with a Nikon 12-24 f4 which I much prefer. I would go second hand Nikon or the Tokina as its an even faster lens. Do you really want a super wide for animals though? They are not flattering for people due to the distortion and are better suited to landscape work.

if i remember correctly this was taken at about 8 inches away on 11mm

What's the lens flare like on it? I've read conflicting reviews/reports with some saying it's no worse than any other WA lens and others saying it's the worst of the lot for it.

I've used a Nikon 50mm 1.8G on a D7000 for pet portrait pics and they turn out great! Most the time :-p

Not too pricey and a good lens

In my experience I've not suffered from lens flare like that, yet my brother with same lens has moaned once or twice but in fairness he was shooting with bright sunshine on the side

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I didn't realise there were so many choices!

Why do you need to be able to get up close? And how big can your animals be to not be able to fit them in at 28mm??

I need to interact with them in order to get them to do what I want for the photos, I also want certain perspectives that can't be obtained from a distance. I find it's difficult fitting horses in at ~28mm, and I'm stuck at f/3.5 with that lens.
