Ok, at the moment we're on AOL 2meg unlimted, which does the job fine apart from when me and my bro are both on vent and Counterstrike, then we lag when we speak.

So im looking at a new ISP with 8meg download and pref at least 400+upload.

Its for Counterstrike source and a low ping is desirable at all times of the day.

We cannot get cable in our area.

I've come up with a short list from http://www.dslzoneuk.net/, so give me your opinions on them below:

1) UK Online, 8Meg down, 786K upload, Unlimited downloads, 33:1 Contention ratio, £24.99, http://www.ukonline.net/broadband/upto8Mb.php?sso_auth=0

2) Demon, 8Meg down, 448K upload, Unlimited downloads, £19.99, http://www.demon.net/demon/products/internetaccess/broadband/home

3) ndo, 8Meg down, 448K upload, 60gig Cap, 50:1 Contention ratio, £24.95, http://www.ndo.com/home_broadband.html

4) Orange, 8Meg down, Not sure upload, Unlimited downloads, £19.99, http://www.orange.co.uk/time/broadbandunlimited/

UKFSN is far too expensive, most im looking at is £25 a month, also leetzor, as i said when me and my bro are on vent, so its double the usage i guess, we have 288upload atm and we lag so how can 256k be "fine"...

IDNet has a 30Gb monthly usage cap (Seems quite low). Since we're on unlimited ive no idea how much bandwith we use, but im guessing quite a bit, as AOL class us as a heavy user.

I'm on a 30GB peak and 300gb off peak cap with UKFSN for £20 a month.

like A2Z said....have you even bothered reading up on them?

IIRC contention rates aren't applicable anymore. Some packages will offer higher priority at the exchange should it become very busy but thats about it.

For £25 a month you won't get a good and unlimited service anymore.....just doesn't happen!

NDO.

Unlimited off peak downloads, unlimited on and off peak uploads, excellent torrent speeds, and I always get low pings to game servers. This is the longest I've stayed with any ISP (12 months) and I've no intention of leaving in the near future, they're a quality ISP. :)

Have i checked them out....i asked people for help...if someone recommends an isp then of course im going to "check them out" and as i said before "Home MAX 60 60 GB 330 GB £29.99 " that is out of my price range.

However lookingat the lower package "Home MAX 30 30 GB 300 GB £19.99"

im not sure quite how much bandwidth we would use, but as a family of 5 with 4 pcs in the house im guessing quite a lot..

"**Peak hours are defined as Monday to Friday 08:00 to 22:00
***Off-peak is defined as Monday to Thursday 22:00 to 08:00 and Friday 22:00 through to Monday 08:00."

But since they have quite generous off peak and peak hours compared to the other companies it looks like quite a lot of the use will be from the 300gb limit and not the 30gb. So looks like i may try these guys out, thanks.

Yeah thats what attracted me was the weekends classed as off peaks, read the pages properly unlike i did, i thought the prices included vat but they don't i only found out after i had payed that vat wasn't included, my own fault for not reading properly.

May want to take a little care with UKFSN or any of the other Entanet resellers if your main interest in gaming.

The only problem with the off-peak cutting in at 10pm is that a lot of people schedule downloads to start then so the pipes can get a bit over loaded some nights which can mkae gaming after 10pm a bit dodgy.

Same can occur at weekends for the same reason.

They are looking at solutions though so it may get sorted out.

i was wondering if that was the case, the 10pm isnt really a problem but weekend high pings would put me off buying. I want to find someone who is with UK Online because they look like a good buy, with unlimited access and quick upload speeds.

Don't concern me i game online very rare now, pretty much bored of 2142 now just have the occasional game of it now and then.

I'd suggest thinking about how much you use before you go any further because unlimited usage is a pipe dream, and for <£25 you'd be easier looking for rocking horse poo.
Gaming doesn't use that much, and neither does browsing nor email.

The majority of IPStream ISPs (like Enta) are much of a muchness - the biggest factor is the BTw element that's between you and the ISP which a) won't change between ISPs and b) you have no control over.
Obviously some overload their Centrals and some use traffic shaping to maintain reasonable latency, but other than that the difference isn't that significant.

cheers, what is "BTw" ? ive really no idea how much we use. and im guessing a 30gig cap would be ample. All i want is a stable low ping at all times and a decent upload speed so me and my bro can use vent at the same time.

And most importantly to avoid companies such as Tsicali and Pipex, because the CSS forums are littered with people having ping problems with these companies.

i know btw is by the way , but he put "BTw" in this context "the biggest factor is the BTw element that's between you and the ISP which" so i guessed it must mean somthing else?
