Looking to build a decent computer for gaming

Hi,

Well I haven't bought a PC for at least 5 years now and I am starting to get back into PC gaming. At the minute I am using my brothers old Athon based machine which just about manages BF2 but is no good for some of the newer games.

I have basically put together a list of components for my build and just wanted to know if everything looks ok. I have not built one before and to be frank I am not great when it comes to hardware. But I would like to try do it myself anyway, and I always have my father in law to help if needs be.

So opinions please? Around £900 is my total budget by the way and I am using it on a Samsung HD TV which has a maximum resolution of 1364 x 768 if I remember correctly.

As I said this is mainly for games and media, as well as all of the usual family video's / pictures. I just want to be able to play games like Stalker etc and have a fairly future proof system for the next 2-3 years.

Thanks for any help, the spec is below.
-Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.66GHz (1333FSB) - Retail

-OcUK GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

get the Intel E6550 rather than the 6750 and clock it, or go quad core.

Looks a solid m'board but personally i would wait for the x38 chipset boards.
I would also go for the Corsair PSU over the OCZ. The OCZ i had was loud.

This would do much better than what you have above. Add to it the OS and peripherals of your choice. :)

Changes:

Motherboard to IP35 Pro.

Case to P182/Lian Li PC7/Lian Li P1000 etc.. look in the case forum for ideas. 900 is dire for cooling and looks tacky.

PSU to Corsair 520W.

Harddrive to Western Digital AAKS 500GB.

CPU and RAM are okay. You might as well go with 4GB of RAM though if you're getting a 64bit OS. The Corsair 4GB kit is supposed to be good.

Beaten to it by billy. I'd still use the WD AAKS drive. It's much faster then the Seagate.

Yeah, I thought about that. The Seagate's on sale now and the I was running out of budget room so I went for it.

Also, MrHanky, is the budget £900? What you've listed above comes out to £951.50 on OcUK just now.

Thanks for the response guys. It was £900 but I can stretch to £950. It's only jumped up because of the head phones. Unfortunately I need a decent set though as I mainly play once my son has gone to bed and my computer is just down the stairs from my sons room.

Will the 320mb graphics card be sufficient for games such as Stalker and upcoming DX10 games?

Thanks again

Mark

It will run them on 1280x1024. Anything more is pushing it. You're looking at a 2900XT for decent DX9 results in upcoming games. The 2900XT is waiting on a driver release to let it really shine in DX10 right now though.

Just offering mine :)

[EDIT]: Redone since I forgot the OS and heaphones :D Includes Vista 64bit this time and also pimp headphones for gaming, since you can stretch to £950!

Brilliant, thanks all again for your help. Hopefully I will order the final spec tonight but it is going to be around the ATI card and last 2 specs that were listed. If needs be I may have to spend a few more £'s, but I would rather do this now rather than later.

You have 2x DVD writers listed, that correct?

If not then take the cash from one and upgrade the E6550 to a E6750.

Rest, however, looks great :)
