I7 system with overclocking in mind, budget:

£250 ish on cpu
£200 ish for ram
and £200 for mobo.
cooling £- whatever is needed.

Is there a particular motherboard that would be best for overclocking?
Is there a particular guide to overclocking that i could read ?

Ive overclocked - years ago and it was all done in the bios and generally involved lots of faffing around with voltages, was an old asus board that i had and to say things were a complete bind wasnt 1million miles from the truth...

The CPU you want is this. however, the slightly faster (2.8ghz, 22 max multiplier) version - the i7 930 - will be here in a few days for effectively the same price. i would suggest waiting for that.

as for ram, this will do the job happily unless your really want the no1 benchmark scores or need 12gb ram.

as for mobo, i would strongly suggest this. lovely motherbard - great to overclock with.

as for cooling, that depends on how far you want to take the overclocking. if like most of us you want the scope to hit 4ghz with your i7 - then i would suggest this or this (with one or two of these fans).

This guide looks pretty good as does this. I'm also sure there are some good ones on OCUK forums too.

I think the problems or issue i had in the past was motherboards that made you reset the cmos everytime you made a bad clock - this caused one to run out of patience, is it true that most if not all newer mobo's will protect against this and have some sort of protection against this?
