well my current system is starting to become outdated, and not performing to which i feel it should and want, seeing as though you lot seem to know quite a bit about what is what I'll ask here.

Current spec:
Intel Q6600 2.4ghz @ 2.4ghz
ASUS P5N-E SLI 650i
Sapphire Radeon 4870 1GB toxic edition (2 of them)
Hiper 680w
1GB Crucial ballistix PC6400
1GB SuperTalent??? :D PC5300/PC5400 (really not sure)
Creative sound blaster 7.1 (no drivers, cant find any either for it, and i've literally downloaded every single driver possible to no avail, using mobo onboard)
Antec 900

Wanted spec:
New i7 CPU with a capable mobo which is able to sustain a cpu overclock to go above 3.5ghz+
Memory equivalent to cpu overclock (3.5ghz+)
Power supply
solid state hard drive

any help appreciated!

ive just bought an i7 920, the ga-ex58-ud3r, and the kingston ddr3 6gb 2000mhz kit
ive put win7 64 on it, and its the best thing ive ever done
and, all ive done is out the ram voltage up from 1.5 to 1.58 i think it is, (probably didnt need that), the bclk frequency up to 180, and it just went ...straight to 3.6, no issues, no cpu voltage alterations

ps dont run it like that all the time, im satisfied with 3.0-3.2

pps got a tagan pipe rock 900watts

:confused::confused::confused:

You've got Crossfired 4870s and you're not happy?

What resolution are you playing at?

The only thing that I can see is holding you slightly back is the stock Q6600. If you overclock that to 3GHZ+ (which it should do no problem) then that PC is very good.

well the thing is, my cpu just wont overclock and if i do my pc once in windows just freezes when it becomes under pressure

Just realised something, how are you running 2 4870 gpu's ? as your board is SLI and the ATI cards require crossfire board (or your running only one)

just realised what i actually put, i have two cards but i'm only using one of them at the moment. i meant it as though i have two cards which i was going to use for my new spec, sorry for confusion ! :<

Overclock your cpu first, you'll notice a big difference, which may give you enough performance, and you won't need to spend hundreds of pounds on going i7...

This, combined with buying a decent mobo that would a) allow you to OC and b) use your 2 gfx cards in xfire
eg asus P5Qpro or above
