hey i currently have a hp 1440x900 19inch monitor which has been perfect for about 5 years and given me no problems at all but since building a new pc i feel its time to upgrade and maybe look for something larger? I mainly watch videos and play games occasionally use photoshop.

I have about £150 to spend any ideas? Was thinking 23 or 24inch

Thanks in advance ;)

Hi there,

For your uses of photoshop, movie watching and general desktop usage I would suggest you look for a monitor that uses an IPS panel (better colour accuracy and wider viewing angles compared to TN panel monitors). In this price bracket you should be able to get a 21.5in or 23in IPS panel monitor.

If at all possible I would stretch your budget and go for this ASUS ML239H for £180 or the Dell U2312HM for £200, as both of these monitors use a nice 23in 1080p E-IPS panel but also are set up so they handle motion well - a feature that few of the even cheaper IPS panel monitor share, which makes those ones less than ideal for gaming. In contrast the ASUS and Dell are used by many forum members for playing games and they generally find them to be pretty good to use in games.

If you really need to keep the budget at £150 or less and want to go for an IPS panel then the LG IPS235V is a decent option.

Alternatively, you could go for a second hand dell. These monitors are really great to buy second hand since if you get the original box then you can use the remaining warranty (when bought new it comes with three years cover). For example you should be able to find a second hand U2311H for ~£120-130 and these are really nice monitors and pretty much on-par with the U2312HM in terms of performance (though the '11 uses a CCFL backlight while the '12 uses an LED backlight, not that it matters very much).

However, if you want a monitor which is more focused on gaming (though less good for colour accuracy and viewing angles) then this budget will get you a decent TN type panel 24in 1080p monitor. This one is a decent option and currently the price is really quite low.

thanks for the very in depth reply much appreciated as for photoshop i dont really use it that often so i should really base my decision around gaming. The BenQ G2420HDBL looks nice and thats a very good price will prob go with this one.

Right been thinking will increase to £200-250 and play games a lot more than i do photoshop so whats the best thing to do??

In that case you may want to consider a 120Hz monitor. These use TN panels - so you won't get the same level of colour accuracy and wide viewing angles of an IPS panel, but they are usually still pretty good for image quality and they offer some really nice features for playing games (for reference standard IPS and TN panel monitors have a refresh rate of 60Hz).

Firstly, the 120Hz mode make fast motion feel really smooth, so for playing games it is nice to have. Also these monitors have very fast pixel response times (so little ghosting) and low input lag.

If you can stretch your budget by £20 then I would recommend this BenQ XL2420T. This is a really well regarded 24in 120Hz monitor that came out recently.

yeh was looking at that one earlier really like it would the 5870 be ok on that?

Yes, that should be fine - the BenQ can do 120Hz through the dual-link DVI or Displayport connections, so you have some choice there considering your graphics card has both of these outputs.

Here is a really in-depth review of the BenQ XL2420T, really worth a read.
