Hi All,

Have just seens these new chips and fancy the new E8500 as a b'day present to go to from my E6600, but wanted to check the compatibility of my kit.

If anyone can help, that would be great.

Motherboard is Gigabyte GA965P DS4 (Socket 775)
Memory is Geil 4 * 1GB PC2-6400

Cheers

It should support them with a bios update really as ASUS's 965P boards support them.

ok, thanks for the help guys, looks like for the time being I'll have to wait for a BIOS update, though as the board does support 1333 processors there hopefully is a good chance it might work with them.

Main problem I think is the multiplier for the FSB as currently from what I can see in the BIOS it maxes at 9 and not the 9.5 required for the E8500.

Accordining to anandtech it'll work off the bat and doesn't even need a bios update.

Also as for the multi, bios will only show you what is available for the particular CPU you are using.

Cheers Hex,

Will let my wife know that's what I want for my b'day then :D

Will there be any problem with the memory? as it's 6400 will it be fast enough or should I upgrade that?

All I have to do then is to work out how I can get a gfx card upgrade as well. maybe a bunch of flowers and some chocs are will do the trick.

How did you work that out? From the above link P965 mobos aren't even listed in the chart and have a maybe against should work, well that's the way I read it anyway.

Whoops missread the P35-DS4, wish Gigabyte would give there boards different names lol

It should still work though, there really is no reason why not if other 965P boards can run them.

Main problem is that Gigabyte released various revisions, I myself have a rev2 P965 DS3P and there's no BIOS update for it to support 1333MHz CPUs because Gigabyte state that only the newer version 3.3 will support them. :(

All the ASUS boards that support them are via OC'd FSB, the chip will work without a BIOS update, it'll just run at a lower FSB, then you have to manually set it to 333 and it should work.

Can't say it'll be exactly the same on the Giga's but i'd be surprised if they couldn't run them by OC'ing the FSB.

However, after doing a few googles, it seems that the E6750/E6850 1333FSB chips won't work on the Giga's either... just seems like Giga is being lazy and forcing people to upgrade to me...

Look at ASUS's 45nm support list:

http://event.asus.com/mb/45nm/

Everything 945 and up will work with Wolfdale...

So why can't Gigabytes...

Looks like I have to hold off on that order until someone confirms that they've got one working with the M/B.

Could change the M/B as well, but hate having to take all of the kit out of the case and put it all back in again.
