hey peeps!

contemplating adding watercooling to my set up to overclock it to get some extra oomph out of my machine

Bits:
AMD fx 8350
gigabyte 990fx ud3
32gb Ram (can't remember at the moment)
gigabyte gtx 970 4gb mini

what would be the best set up to get the best out of my system?

how many rads/pumps would I need if I was planning to cool everything?

what would be the best water additive stuff if I wanted to add black or red coloured liquid?

any help would be greatly appreciated...

will probably need a new case to go with it... Are the open cases any good for this??

Thanks peeps!

Little point in watercooling ram or motherboard, it (generally) doesnt benefit.
1 pump, either DDC or D5 will be fine.

Generally its suggest that 120mm rad area per component, then an extra one on top... So if cooling single cpu and single GPU then you would need 3x120mm radiator area. this could be 1 360mm rad, or 1x 120mm and 1x 240mm radiator etc.
Now there are always exceptions to the rule, some cpus generate a lot more heat that others, same with some GPUs... and some single board graphics cards are actually 2 gpus on one board (6990 etc)

:)

Open cases are not ideal unless your okay cleaning, dust gets on everything after a while and the risk of it getting knocked is too high for my liking.
Are you afraid of big cases/do you have room for one? Second hand you can get some absolute bargains if you can collect... Have seen Enthoo Primo's sell for £40 collected and thats a big case with tons of room to work in! Its what I use for 1x 480mm radiator, 1x 240mm radiator, 30cm res, 4x hdd and I still have a ton of space.

Second hand is a great way of collecting bits, lots of bargains to be had but you do need a rough plan of what you want/need otherwise you end up wasting money on bits you dont need. And if you find watercooling isnt for you then you can almost certainly get back exactly what you paid for the second hand bits. :)

hmmm.... Not a bad plan for the second hand idea... Never really thought of that... Might have a look at some cases too....

I keep seeing those really nice looking cases where they just have a glass panel on one side... Then thought of making one myself as it'd be easy to make one for half the price they charge..

I also realized my gpu is a short one as I bought it for my previous mini it's build that went to the mrs... So no full blocks... Might look to upgrading it soon so it turns out ill probably only need it for the cpu... Which is good as it'll make it cheaper too.... Ooo... Cheers bud!

No worries.

If you get a big case and fit the biggest radiators then it makes it easy, fans can run slower as they have to do less work.

CPU only to start with is easy, simple loop to get your head around.
You may be able to do a GPU core only rather than full cover block, then stick heatsinks on the ram/VR's... Or upgrade ;)

Only RULE is that RES comes right before the pump, everything else can go in whatever order is easiest/most pleasing to the eye.

A drain port is useful, but not needed... my res is at the bottom of the case feeding the pump and I use a large syringe with a length of flexi tube to drain it directly, no need for a drain port:

:D

nice... Might look into the heatsink idea for the gfx card... Any ideas if u could 3d print a custom waterblock and just gat a plate machined for the bottom???

No idea, but many moons ago I did a GPU only block on an 8800gtx and thermal frag tape (adhesive heattransfer tape) of various blocks onto everything else that got warm. Worked well.

According to the EK cooling configurator the EK VGA Supremacy (its a universal block) will fit your card.

Will it??? When I put it in last night it said it didn't.... It's cause I did an itx build and had to get the short card for the case... Meh...

nevermind.... Apparently I stopped reading at the no full card bit.... Oh well... Works out a load cheaper... So that's a bonus! The pumps you mentioned before... Will they run 2 rads? Or would I be ok with 1 massive rad???

So long as you dont have like 6 foot plus of hosing then either will be fine. I have run both (at different times), usually with CPU, 2x GPUs and 2x RADs... So you will be fine :)

Yeah, that waterblock is a core only on the graphics, so you will need other heatsinks for mem/VRMs etc.

If you can do it with just 1 big rad do that, its less hose, less routing complications and 2 less connections that could leak. :)

No worries.

Work out your 'wish list' if you were buying new, print it out/save it and check back here, then chip away picking bits up second hand/cheap where you can knowing the best prices you have found..

And remember, the only daft question, is the question that isnt asked... If in doubt about anything just come on here and ask!
