Looking to get into Nikon

Maybe just get a couple of four gig class 4 cards
and get class 10 if you go hd like D7000
class 4 is still good enough for video for a D90/ D5000

The 50mm f1.8 will work fine on the D300. It's only the D700 up which are full frame (and it might work fine on those too - I've no idea).

As you may already be aware though, it won't autofocus on the D3000 (or D40, D40x, D60, D3100 or D5000).

To clarify - any lens will work on any Nikon digital SLR. With a caveat - because DX lenses don't cover the entire sensor on full frame the camera only uses the part of the sensor covered (basically electronically turning a FX sensor into a DX one). The disadvantage of this approach is the subset of the sensor is obviously much lower resolution (the 12MP D700 drops to 5MP in DX crop mode).

It's an emergency thing.

Though, it does have the advantage that the D3s and D3x shoot a couple of frames a second faster in crop mode than full frame - so if you need 11fps rather than 9fps (or 7fps instead of 5fps for the D3x) then it's there. I know of precisely nobody who uses this however.

Basically it's nice in concept that Nikon kept everything compatible but in practice it's of limited use...

well, some DX lenses work ok on FX cameras at certain focal lengths. Like the 17-55 2.8 is supposedly fine from 30mm up.

It is also good for emergencies.

Less with any filters at all. If it was enough of an emergency I had to do that I'd accept shooting in crop mode personally, at least you have the option with Nikon...
