Been thinking about learning a musical instrument for a while now and decided to go for a keyboard... Any tips on what I should start with?! Books etc... Just gonna teach myself.

Also. I will need to buy one = D After a quick google I'm not looking to spend more than £80 really... Would you go the second hand route or something on Amazon?!

Thanks.

I know a recorder isn't cool but it's the perfect starting instrument. Means if you don't like playing music (that sounds grammatically awkward) it's not going to be a huge cost. Will teach you basic of sheet reading, rythm, tempo, etc etc without having loads on a keyboard.

Ha.

Initially I had thought about the violin as I love the sound it makes... But doubt I could teach myself. If I'm going to stick with this it has to be something I want to play... Sorry recorder = (

I bought a keyboard a little while ago. Haven't started on it yet :/ although piano/keyboard requires technique I don't think it's as important as bow angle etc for those string instruments. I think you should really get a tutor for something like violin or cello.

having listened to a mechanical piano i can tell you that technique is VERY important for the piano. not so sure with a keyboard though

Bagpipes sibling, I can guarantee that when you roll down your local highstreet playing various songs relating to haggis, people will endeavour miles just to see you.

I'd say Piano/Keyboard is a great place to start. Word of warning with getting a keyboard though, make sure you learn to play with your left hand as if you're playing a piano (actual notes), than the keyboard route (tends to be left hand handles chords predominantly).

Keyboard isn't a bad choice. The feel will be nothing compared to what a real piano is like, but it's a great start for understanding music, and learning music :)

When I tried to teach myself to learn the guitar (gave up through lack of dedication in the end), the whole reading music that I'd learnt from the piano was great, as it meant I could actually read music etc.. rather than having to rely on tabs etc...

Thanks for the input. I'm looking at something like this... Yamaha YPT210 Portable Digital Keyboard

Just came across a refurbished one for about about £55 with a 2 year guarantee!

edit: Just bought it. Gives me something to do in the evenings = D

if you're dead set on learning the keyboard i'd get a half decent one to start with, no need to spend mega money,,,,
what you got get depends on why you wan't to learn the keyboard...do you want to use the beats etc to play electronic/dancey stuff or more for the straight up piano sound

I'd get one that's touch sensitive and has full size keys...
