Looking to leave O2 and switch to Three...

My contract with O2 finishes in Sept (but I have an early upgrade in August!) and having had a quick look around. I have found Three to have the best deal so far.

I can get an SGS4 on The One Plan. I have been with O2 for over 10yrs now and I have reached the point where I don't feel like I am getting a good deal from them.

I know that when I tell them I plan to leave, they will start making all kinds of offers under the sun.

But my question is, how much notice should I give them and when should I start a contract with Three? Also, how quick is O2's turnaround for PAC codes and such as I want to keep my number when I switch to Three.

Muchos gracias senors and senoritas! :D

I recently did this, and I asked for my PAC just as my final month started. I got the PAC in about 5 minutes from putting the phone down, then filled out the Three form online. It was transferred within 3 days.

I got the, "Oh we can match that offer!" stuff, but I just told him that it wasn't a match (especially since 1gb is not unlimited data..), I just want the PAC.

Just start it with a month left, and you can upgrade early to another network! My final payment was under £19 for o2, even though I was on £32/month.

I cancelled with O2 yesterday after being with them for 4 years, they asked why I was leaving and gave them several strong reasons, asked what deal I was getting elsewhere and they tried offering me a deal on a different phone from what I wanted for about £3p/m extra with worse mins/texts/data than other networks, said no thanks and got a PAC generated generated almost instantly.

I asked for my PAC a month ago and the customer support gave it to me during the call, so it was very quick. I didn't get offered anything else though when they asked what network I was moving to (giffgaff) so it was a quick and short call. It was probably due to the unlimited data I was after and she knew they couldn't match it. Must say it was the best customer support I got from a mobile company for a long time :p.

I only managed to use the PAC 3 days after the contract ended due to giffgaff's working days however, but luckily O2 charged nothing for those 3 days.

Nice. Thanks guys! Let's hope I am just as lucky when I leave them. Or it happens just as quickly! Lol. :)

I migrated from 02 to three they just couldn't compete on price/data allowance and choice of handset when the SGS3 first came out.

Was a hassle free move. The 3 network isn't quite as stable as 02 seemed, but looking at the big picture its a much better overall package... I've not looked back.

Was with O2 since bt genie days and when I left them a few years ago they offer me nothing.

Seems companies don't bother with loyal customers anymore.

Customer service is less good than Three and 2G signal is poor (but better 3G). I wouldn't switch back to O2 now because of the unlimited data situation - assuming a like for like contract though, I'd take O2.

I've just jumped ship from O2, been with them for 13-14 years. Virgins sim only plan of unlimited calls, texts and data for £15 a month on a 1 month contract knocked spots of O2, who wanted £21 for unlimited calls, texts and 1gb of data on a 12 month plan.

Virgin is also hosted on the EE network so hopefully coverage should be as good, if not better than O2.

From my own experience retention offers seem to be based on how much you spend outside of contract eg roaming abroad. If you only use your set minutes etc then they can't make any extra money so you get the standard offers. If they think you'll spend more elsewhere you get a better upfront deal.

Three are now down to £18 a month for their one plan 30 day contract including tethering so I think they will be winning a lot of custom now. Even more so when they said no extra charges for 4g!

Is that typo? Three doesn't have any 2G... unless you're on about the defunct Orange fall back.
I'm on Giff Gaff but soon to be Three; O2's pathetic excuse for a 3G infrastructure has always left disappointed.

No typo, the 2G fallback.

Where?

It's not an online deal yet so no cashback but via phone and in store you can take it out.

Good point, I assumed if they hadn't updated online it probably wasn't available yet. Phoned up today and switched from £25/month to £18/month - quite a painless and not too prolonged encounter with CS either!

Finally got my PAC from O2. The dude I was chatting with was not even trying hard to make me stay. He just made me more annoyed. I don't know how many times I asked for my PAC code. But he kept going on and on about the O2 Refresh and what it does and blah blah blah.

Anyway, I got my PAC code and at the same time I have ordered a new phone via Three. Went for the One Plan with the Galaxy S4 as the phone is now free (until 9th Aug). So when it arrives, I will arrange to have my number switched over. And no more O2.

They did say that if I cancel my contract early it will be a charge of £17. I don't mind that. My contract ends in Sept but I had a month early upgrade due in Aug. Might wait until after that date and then switch. But either way, I don't care. I just want rid of O2 once and for all.

I switched form O2, and they made it as difficult as humanely possible. I doubt that I will ever go back to O2 again. I'm with giffgaff now, of course it is still their network. They threatened all sorts of cancellation charges even though I was giving adequate notice, so in the end the easiest way was to have the phone go to PAYG at the end of the contract, then get a PAC code in order to move it. Annoyingly, they then refused to give me a PAC code until I put £10 credit on the PAYG account to make it "active". I told them it as already active, I was receiving calls and messages, but that didn't matter. So I had to put £10 credit on and use that up before moving...

Just want to say thanks to everyone's suggestion for switching to Three. Made the switch 3 weeks ago. Been very impressed with the speed so far. And using the SGS4 makes it even better. So glad to be finally away from O2. Got my final bill from them which was around £13.

Three's One Plan is definitely my kinda tariff! :)
