At the moment i've got a rather poop asrock pcie-agp hybrid, with 2gb ram, and a x1950 agp.... i also have 2gb more ddr2 but the mobo o and an e1280.... so i'm looking to upgrade my mobo, and thus graphics card...

Ok , so pure specs:
I have 4gb (2x2) of 0cz 5400 mem
I also have an e1280, with an arctic pro cooler thing....

In my future system i'd want to overclock this to take full advantage of it , and hoepfully find a safe overclock of about 3.4ish.....

So i'm looking for a decent, sturdy, easily overclocked mobo... so for that would i be looking at a variation of the aus p5k? since i want to spend around £80 on a mobo

For a graphics card (and this is the thing i really need advice on) what should i look for: I play on a monitor of 1280x1024, so i'd imagine that'd improve gameplay a fair bit..... i'm looking in the price range between £100 and £200 , and i'd look for this to last me the next year or 2 years on a squeeze,..... also i'm looking to buy this in late june, early july time as exams will have finished and the british summer is pants :P.... any ideas would be appreciated, >> i heard that the 8800gtx would be good.....

at your res, the difference between a 8800GT and 8800GTX is minimal

personally i would get the abit ip35 or ip35 pro as the MB.

You can get my board (the P5K-E) for £85 delivered, good build quality and the BIOS is quite tweakable as you'd expect from an ASUS board. Comes with built-in USB WiFi module as a plus :)

I think at 1280x1024 a 8800GT will be the most worthwhile and most future-proofing for the res than some similar, cheaper cards like the HD38xx/9600GT.

can anybody name a GT they'd advise i go for?.. and are you sure i should go for a Gt, and wont regret not spending the extra 30 or 40 pounds in a few months or so?... i mean what kind of fps could i expect on say crysis, everything on ultra, 1280x1024, possibly 2xaa.... ?....

I run a 8800GT and i have completely smooth framerates in Crysis (even in the mountains) at 1280x1024 with everything set to high and 4x AA. It's a cracking card. Just get the cheapest one you can find.

Motherboards wise, the Gigabyte P35 DS3 series is very good as is the Asus P5K-E.

ok i've chosen 3 possible cards:
8800 gts £140

8800 gt £135

or cheaper 8800gt £112

should i spend the extra bob and get a better GT, or even a GTS .. am i likely to seen a gain (i'm sorry you've told me to get a GT, but it would help me if i could be pointed to a specific one, since they range from £90-£190 ) .. muchous apreciated...

Just buy the cheapest (OcUK one is only £110) as they are all the same cards, the only differences are warranty length, what software you get (games etc...), the picture on the cooler, and clock/memory/shader speeds, but the cheapest will easily clock to the OC speeds and beyond. :)
