Looking to replace NV680GTX ASAP

My dying card needs replacing, I think my NV680 is about right for my CPU so replacing it with anything top notch would be a waste.

I wouldn't mind going a little better for the odd game that maybe more graphic intensive but don't want to waste too much money.

I'd rather stay with NVidia just not sure what I'm looking for maybe a 1060gtx around £200-£240 which would work in the new rig for a while as well.
Also which is better one or two fans I'd like it on the quiet side if possible.

Any suggestions, Thanks Sel.

I think your options are either a GTX1060 6GB or a used GTX980Ti.

What CPU/PSU do you have? What resolution are you running?

As for the number/size of fans, I think the larger they are the quieter they will be. I believe the more powerful cards generally (though not always) have at least two fans in order to keep the temperatures low enough.

Thanks for the replies.

Specs i5 750 @ 3.4GHz, 16GB RAM, GTX680 GPU, Gigabyte GA/P55-UD5 ,750w,win7 64
It will overclock to 4Ghz but I never bother as it just gets hot and I don't see any significant gains.

When I went from ATI 5850 to NV680 I didn't see much improvement in FPS but I could jump the graphics up without any loss so I know anything more is really a waste. ATI 5850 is currently installed again and working just a little lag here and there.

Currently I'm only running one screen 1920x1200, I've thought about three for sim racing.

Thanks.

Opinions may vary here, but in your shoes, I'd be looking at upgrading the CPU and motherboard first.

Graduating to a higher resolution will reduce the impact of a 'slower' CPU.

What PSU is it? How old (750w isn't enough information)? :)

You'd resolve a dying gpu by getting a new cpu and motherboard?

OP - Get a 1060 6GB if you want to stick with Nvidia, if you shop around you can find them for a touch over £200 which suites your budget.

If aiming to get more performance in games as the OP mentioned in his first post, yes. In the long term, this will be beneficial, otherwise, the gap will only widen. Remember, he mentioned that he didn't notice much of a bump from a 5850 to a 680, though that does surprise me a little.

If he only wanted to replace it and wasn't concerned about more performance/considering adding more screens/higher res, then erm...no. :p

I am surprised as I went from a 5850 to a mere GTX 570 and saw a reasonable bump on a Q9450! But then if you up graphics settings considerably FPS may be stable but IQ will be improved. A 1060 would be fine and easily within the limits of even a cheap 750w PSU.

Again thanks for all the replies.
PSU is about 4 years old Corsair.

When I upgraded form 5850 to NV680 I did seen an improvement it wasn't massive but things did feel smother.
There wasn't a single frame improvement in A2/OA with no change in graphics settings, I could however then up the graphics settings quite a bit without taking any hit in FPS. Right now I really don't need a new PC as I'm still running everything well enough.

The reason I think I'll go with 1060 6gb is because if in a few months if something does go wrong with the MB or CPU I'll at least have a card that won't be too bad in the short term and will take advantage of a better CPU.

I think as long as you upgrade to a new CPU (and mobo if need be) not too terribly far down the line, then buying a new card right now is fine - but you will see considerably better performance from your new card when you pair it with a more recent CPU. Enjoy. :)

That PSU is fine.

Just tried A3 with 5850 using the 680s settings and it's really sluggish going back to the 5850.

Out of the dual fan 1060 6gb cards available at OCUK are there any to avoid?
I may pop in the shop tomorrow morning if I can find the time.

I would also think about upgrading your 750 to an i7 860/870, as the extra threads make a considerable difference in smoothness these days, and the 860 has become dirt cheap (£60ish) - and then overclocking to 4GHz. The additional clock speed might not have made much difference on your 680, but if you go 1060 or even 980Ti, you will see a difference. Within your budget I'd get a 1060 6GB and swap your 750 for an 860.

@F2kSel

I had i7 860@4ghz + and jumped to 7600k with 3466hz ram and got 15-30fps with multiple cards combinations (970/80/Ti, 1060/70/80, rx480) . 860/70 would be a good shout but Upgrade should be given some series thought!

I got annoyed at the time with all these dx11 vs 12 benchmarks claiming there was no gains, from that I could see was intel devil's canyon cpu and above, with Gen 1-3 you will be a big increase playing DX12 games at least with up to 12-15 FPS , so play DX12 mode when you can with newer games unlike most that go for dx11 for higher frame rates with more modern CPUs

Upgrading is an option but right now for the games I play I just can't justify it.
I've no interest in 4k displays or VR in the short term, I don't have Win10 so DX12 isn't an option.

I did get a new card on Saturday and it's all looking good, this time I did get a boost if a few games.
Not amazing results but about 10% increase give or take.

The biggest difference now is that I don't have a hoover droning away in the background, I've only got the temps up to 60degrees and the fans only seems to increase from 50-52%

Had my i5-750 clocked to 4.2ghz I think it was a golden chip and was fantastic lasted me about 5 years even today at those speeds for the price will do fantastically

At 4Ghz one of the cores fails memtest, It was an OCUK Overclocked Bundle.
I even took the PC in for them to test, they said it was fine but still failed memtest for me, in games it seemed ok with occasional BSD.
It also has a habit of randomly forgetting the overclocked settings.
