Looking to upgrade cpu/motherboard

I recently bought a new gfx card and I am looking to upgrade my motherboard and cpu.
I have an Alienware Aurora R4, which contains the Intel(R) C600/X79 chipset and the Intel Core i7 - 4820K processor and looking to upgrade these components, not to go way above board in terms of upgrade but a sufficient upgrade so that its brought up to date.

The reason I am looking to upgrade motherboard is due to compatibility issues, I am unsure how to check if a CPU is compatible with my current motherboard so I gathered that buying a new one would be the easiest option, although if it is possible to buy an upgraded CPU without changing motherboard that would be preferable

You can upgrade the CPU to one compatible with the socket on the motherboard. You can get a i7-4930K or i7-4960X to fit that motherboard, it probably won't be much of an upgrade by today's standards and be relatively overpriced - especially the i7-4960X.
