Currently using my I5 2500k overclocked. However 3 years down the line and my pc has started blue screening and It's struggling when it come to streaming.

Now with gaming and streaming being my major concerns I'm looking to upgrade, however I've been out of the loop for a while and all the choices are confusing me a little lol
I've been recommended to move to the 4790k and not to bother with the 5930k stuff yet. I've not used AMD in years so no clue about what they are like now, so I'm looking for advice from the guys in the know :D

I play a lot of WOT so I'd probably want something with better single core power.

Thanks in advance

What do you use the PC for?

What I did with my 2500K is I sold it for £70 and bought an i7 2700K. Doing that would give you a performance boost in highly threaded applications, some games, and many games if you run more than one GPU. The total outlay is likely to be sub £50 once you have bought and sold the CPU's.

An i7 of the same era as your i5 (so an i7 2600K or 2700K) will match current generation i7's once it has been overclocked a bit. I am lucky, my particular i7 runs at 5GHz with nice volts!

What are you typically doing when the PC begins to blue screen though? The i5 should still be a very very capable CPU, so this indicates that something else in your system is likely at fault. You may find that your PC performs much better once you find and rectify the stability issue. :)

The PC is mainly used for gaming and streaming. I wanted to upgrade so I can start to stream in higher quality as this CPU just cannot cope.

When it comes to the blue screen issues I'm afraid it's pretty random, I've had problems with this pc blue screening since the first day I've had it and had to lower the clock and up the voltage from what it was shipped at to make it "more" stable.

Sorry to veer from your original question slightly, but that doesnt sound healthy at all, and it could potentially be an issue which persists once you get a new CPU unless the cause is found. What is the rest of your system specification? :)

It's the old Titan Spinosaur system that Overclockers used to build.

Intel I5 2500k at 4.5ghz
16gb Kingston HyperX Genesis Ram (I added another 8gb)
650watt OCZ ZS
AsusP8Z68-V/GEN3 Mobo

True, did you ever try to add more volts to the IMC or the ram controller in that mono/CPU?

These were the only settings that support told me to change, told me not to raise the mem voltage any higher and the CPU voltage I've set higher to 1.385v (was told to raise it).
As for the extra ram, I added that over a year after first buying the system.

Whether I finally manage to get this system stable or not, I need something better for streaming as this CPU just cannot handle it.

AI Overclock Tuner- Manual
Turbo Ratio - leave this
By all cores - 46
Internal PLL Overvoltage - Enabled
Memory Frequency - 1600mhz

Dram Timing Control - Press Enter
Dram CAS Latency - 9
Dram RAS To CAS Delay - 9
Dram RAS PRE Time - 9
Dram RAS ACT Time - 28

CPU Power Management - press enter
CPU Ratio - 33

Loadline Calibration - Extreme

CPU Voltage - Manual
CPU Manual Voltage - 1.365v
DRAM Voltage - 1.65v

CPU Spread Spectrum – Disabled

I have been using my 2600k overclock at 5ghz for longer than 3 years now myself. I refuse to upgrade it. I hope you get it sorted mate. Your overclock voltage can go up a lot from 1.365v if heat is ok, if its the same as 2600k. I have been using 1.48v for a long time with no problems. I think they work kind of the same.

Anyhow, anybody have any advice on what I should be using to stream?
The I5 hits 100% usage if I try to stream in better quality and can't cope with it.

What are you trying to stream that's hammering the CPU so much? I've got a little Atom rig under my TV which is about 5% as powerful as a 2500k and it barely gets above 10% utilisation when streaming 1080p movies.

i7 will give you more threads - this should help with streaming by giving more CPU power to the encoding, without taking it away from the game.

Thanks that's what I was looking for. Thank :)
Bearing in mind I mainly game but with the streaming (I am upgrading processor so I can stream in better quality etc) what would people recommend I upgrade to?

The 4790k looks like a good buy but is it worth throwing the extra cash towards something else? Would the 4790k be the better buy (Price vs performance) for me?

What about the choices from AMD?
