Hi guys i am looking to upgrade from my i7 920,i was just wondering what would the best processor be for 200-300 euro? Also would i be able to get an adaptor for my cpu cooler so that it would fit the new proccessor. Thanks

The best upgrade for that money would be to buy a really good cooler if yours is not up tot he job, and overclock it heartily.

These 920's have a ton of grunt and love a clock. 200-300 euro for a new cpu + mobo wont net you anything better than a well overclocked 920.

What are your specs and what is the PC for?

If he mostly games and is looking for an upgrade, i am assuming he doesnt find gaming performance up to standard.

kefan's suggestion in the order he mentioned is the way to go.

SSD alone wont put frames on the table.

An R9-290 AMD graphics card with a non reference cooler like this:

Keep an eye out for a nice Overclockers special offer and you might net one quite cheap like many did last week.

Your 6950 is what is holding you back the most tbh. Replace this with a 290 and overclock your CPU and you will be laughing.

*Edit to give you this link*

This guy is in the same position as you more or less (what you have hardware wise in relation tom gaming performance).

Everyone seems to be dishing out essentially what we have said in this thread.

Which cpu cooler do you have ?

I wasn't aware solid state gave extra frames ? thought was just loading time improved ? you have to decide either sell your board ram and cpu and card now and go to a newer 1150 platform or clock the 920 to 3.8 - 4ghz or more sell the 6950 probably get around £60-£70 so yea the cheapest boost you could do would be that and buy a 280x/290.

If you sold what you have you could achieve probably a second hand 5ghz+ capable 1155 platform but you probably wouldn't gain much between say a i7 920 @ 4ghz + 280x vs sandybridge cpu @ 5ghz + 280x yes it will be faster but not by a huge amount, not sure a lastest haswell setup + something like a 280x is achievable second hand yet for £400 but certainly a sandybridge 5ghz setup is.

If it were me I'd get that 920 to 4ghz + sell the 6950 and either buy a second hand 7950 7970 280x 290 if buying new the only card that makes sense is the 280x imo rest are overpriced, I'd be all over a 7970 280x 290 second hand with plenty of warranty left.

GTX 670's 680's or GTX 770 are good cards to go for too depending on the price a good site to compare cards is anandtech click bench at the top you have a tool which you can compare 2013 / 2014 gpus against eachother.

I'd get that £245 280x on here and sell the bf4 code bring the price down to £235 or less hopefully.Other than that I have seen GTX 770's around the £230 mark.

i7 990x isnt worth the bother as the op says he only games, looked at this route myself a few weeks ago and was told the same advice,my i7 930 is already clocked over 4ghz so i got rid of my gtx480 sli and got a sapphire 280x vapourx, feels like a diffrent pc now,but gonna upgrade cpu at the end of the year
