  • Budget: £600 - £800
  • For: Gaming & uni work [games design and engine work]
  • Need: CPU [perhaps bundle]
  • Would Prefer: i7 - 16gb ram
  • Can live without new GFX [only consider price permitting]

Hi all, I'm currently looking to upgrade my main/gaming desktop computer. It was initially built with a cross between video rendering and gaming in mind, though now I'm more just about the gaming.

I like to play most games on the highest settings but lately have been finding myself knocking the graphics down to maintain 30fps, and in extreme cases of games such as Planetside 2 there seems to be nothing I can do to keep a steady framerate [though this game is highly unoptimised it would seem]

Current setup

Asus crosshair IV Formula
6GB of Ram
Phenom II x6 1055 oc@ 3.2ghz
Sapphire HD 6970 2GB
650w PSU

I have around 600 to spend and am able to top out at 800, though I'd rather not go that high if it can be helped.

I'd prefer to buy a motherboard/cpu/ram bundle as opposed to separately and if upgrading the grapics card, am in two minds about crossfiring or a straight upgrade (due to xfire requiring a new PSU for sure)

Any help you guys can afford me would be great,
cheers

I'll be using anything I can keep on to, the only things I want to upgrade are those that I have listed
I have a couple of decent hard drives, an NZXT phantom case, a decent optical drive and all that jazz.

The only other thing I can think of throwing in to the upgrade is the inclusion of an SSD

also you said your all about the gaming atm.would you consider just an I5 and spend money elsewhere or have you got your heart set on an i7 to help with video rendering etc when it is being used for that?

i5 would be acceptable for getting more bang for my buck but I'd like to get an i7 if possible, if an i7 upgrade passes my top end budget don't worry too much as my 800 top end is just for now - I should have another 300 around January if its really needed

The gtx 660ti has cuda which may help you when encoding.

Going crossfire would be cheaper but if you mite get the dreaded micro stutter when gaming.

Just a note the bundle i specked is an sli board.
