so, 4 years went past pretty quick and apparently my machine isn't all that now :(

can barely run "Hard Reset" on lowest settings @40fps. although Deus Ex is running a nice 60fps on medium

my current machine specs...

blah can't edit

EVGA Nforce 680i SLI board
Pentium Quad Core 6600 Go
Corsair XMS2 2Gig set (2x1Gig) @ 1.9V
Corsair XMS2 4Gig set (2x2Gig) @1.8-1.9V
2x Geforce 8800 GT 512 - OCed
Win 7 64bit

now.. bang for buck, what could I get that is a considerable step up to get ready for Skyrim/Rage ... kinda kicking myself as I only just upgraded the fans on my 8800's (was running @95 on load for 4 years and they are still going!)

or is a new machine on the cards...

could I get away with just new ram and a new card? or does the board need replacing to support the faster memory?

ideally i just want to be playing the new games @60fps on at least a medium setting

I can run the Hard Reset demo ay 1680X1050 on ultra settings on an HD5670 GDDR5 and a Core i3 2100 and get an average of 37FPS.

How much are you willing to spend? Is the CPU overclocked? Clocking the CPU to 3ghz+ and maybe getting a 560 Ti could help.

thanks, upped my CPU from 2.4 9x106 to 3.0 9x333 and the cards from 620/1600/900 to 690/1800/940 (core, shader, mem) ... not "huge" differences :(

will checkout that card

+1 for the 6870, performance difference is small, but the 470 will run hotter, noisier, consume a lot more electric and doesn't come with any free games.

All true, but don't forget you also get that little extra bit of VRAM with the 470 which may come in handy further down the line.

Horses for courses really, I'm sure the OP would be happy with either :)

A comparison between the two can be found here

to be honest I'm happy playing games at <= 1680×1050, 16:10

so anything that will give me 60fps on high @ that resolution and I'l be a happy chappy.

also looking at those specs, is it really a big enough jump up that its worth spending any money on? what with my current SLI setup? ... mem clock is a lot better, but the other specs are almost the same ...

A 470 or a 6870 will kill just about any game at 1680 X 1050 @60fps and I wouldn't imagine a 470 will be any hotter than sli 8800gt especially as it wont be pushed at that res.:D

just to throw a wiid idea into the mix how about pushing the budget by £22 and getting a pair of these
awesome performance upgrade from what you have, ram limitations should be fine at your resolution.
I did say it was a wild idea :D
