Looking to upgrade so I can play Witcher 3 etc

Hi all,

My PC at the moment can handle most of the older games I currently have, but I want to upgrade it so that I can play games like Witcher 3, Doom, Monster Hunter etc. at good settings, not just the minimum. Online gaming isn't something I do, if that makes any difference to things. The first component I ordered was a GeForce 1050Ti but have since discovered that it isn't compatible with my motherboard, even with a bios update.

My system at the moment is:
Motherboard: IPIS-CH2
CPU: Intel i7-2600 3.4 Ghz
GFX: GeForce 650Ti boost
PSU: 550W
RAM: 8GB

I've been looking at motherboards and processors that are compatible with each other and was thinking about getting these:
Mboard: https://www.asrock.com/MB/Intel/H370M Pro4/index.asp
CPU: https://ark.intel.com/products/126689/Intel-Core-i3-8350K-Processor-8M-Cache-4-00-GHz-
and I already have the GeForce 1050 Ti.

The motherboard and CPU appear to be compatible, and both get really good reviews. My budget ceiling is around £250, and I could get both of these for less than that.

Does this seem like a good option? Will my PSU be able to handle these, or would I need to replace that also?

Any advice would be very gratefully received.

what is the HP system name you have ?

most atx/matx/itx boards have a 4/8 pin CPU power plug located at the top of the board to supply power , OEM ones like yours hasn't so may kick up a fuss

you'll have to check the PSU unit to see if it has the addition 8 PIN , also checking out its form factor to see if it doesn't, can you replace it

then you'll have to also buy the DDR4 ram .....

quick way to get your 1050ti working is to buy a refurbished dell optiplex for £250 odd, should land i5/i7 model and whack the GPU in - have to see if unit/gpu is slim factor or not

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £262.43 (includes shipping: £10.50)

then factor in PSU....

Thanks orbital. I'm totally new to delving this deep into upgrades so I my have to ask some really basic questions if that's ok.

It's the h8-1010cs. https://support.hp.com/us-en/produc...-pc-series/5080764/model/5119083/product-info

I've found the PSU unit I use. It's this one:
https://www.kitguru.net/components/power-supplies/zardon/ocz-zs-series-550w-power-supply-review/2/
When I look at the cables coming from it, there does seem to be an 8 pin. Although it's split into a 6 and a 2, which can be put together. The plug has PCI-E on it.
When you say form factor, I'm not sure what you mean, can you explain that bit please?

My basket at overclockers uk:
Is the basket you've filled up if I want to go the route of buying new components then putting them together? Or is this on top of buying the refurbed Optiplex?

Apologies for the amateur questions, but as I said I am new to this depth of upgrading, and want to make sure I get it right. I really appreciate the help.

that unit has 4+4 CPU and 6+2 PCIe which is for GPUs , such as gtx 1060, the 1050ti can use the mobo to power it

the above i've listed will work with that PSU you linked and fit in the case .

not sure if you've looked at intel prices recently but the are EXPENSIVE!

ryzen 1400 will give you 4 cores and 8 threads over your current 2/4 . Plus should be able to take 2 more generation of AMD CPUs :)

Thanks a lot orbital. I have been checking prices etc. but to be honest, between my lack of knowledge around the different brands, and the sheer amount of choice, I get totally overwhelmed and never know what to do!

I completely forgot that the 1050 runs off the motherboard. So just to clarify - if I buy those parts you've listed, and put them in my current rig, along with the GeForce 1050 Ti I've bought already, I'm good to go? No new PSU needed?

I'm afraid I don't know what threads and cores are, but from the second part of that sentence, it sounds like I wouldn't need to worry about upgrades for another while yet, which sounds good to me! :)

EDIT: I just realised I made a mistake in my original post. My current CPU is an i7-2600, not and i3-2600. Does that change anything? (I've edited the original post to make the change).

ah- techically they are the same 4 cores and 8 threads but intel would hold the lead due to IPC/chips design - also depending on the speed of the chip to ...

might have to soruce second hand 2nd gen mATX board...

Is that if I was to get an intel card, or is that the same if I was to get a Ryzen? I've been having a look a the Ryzens since you mentioned it, and I actually think I'm going to settle on the Ryzen 5 2600. It's an extra £40 or so but reviews and benchmarks much, much higher than the 1400 and seems to be a huge upgrade on the CPU I have at the moment. I don't mind saving for another month to make sure I get an upgrade that will last me for a while.

Would that require a different motherboard to the one you mentioned in your basket?

EDIT: From this, it looks like it would support a Ryzen 5 2600, unless I've misread something somewhere, which is entirely possible!

Ryzen 2600 is great, can get 1600 for a little cheaper :)

2600 has little bit faster clock speed but would get you in budget :)

Also seems monster hunter likes threads ! So 12 threads Vs the 8 on the intel will help a little :)

Thank you so much orbital, you've given me the confidence to start looking into more detail at some of my options. I often go by user reviews of items, and so with your basket as a start point, I'm thinking I'll go with these:

CPU: https://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-5-2600
Motherboard: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450M-PRO-VDH
RAM: https://uk.************.com/product/p4cMnQ/patriot-viper-4-8gb-2-x-4gb-ddr4-3000-memory-pv48g300c6k

Are they all compatible with each other? This does push me closer to £300, but like I said, I can just save up for one more month to afford it, and I'd rather spend a wee bit more now and give myself a bit longer till I need to upgrade again. :)

Great! It should be ok, the ************ site says the board can use DDR4 3000 which the patriot ram is. Right, I'm off to purchase! Thanks again so much for all the help and patience. It's very much appreciated!

Would avoid PCP as general .
Forums much better .
Most of us here use Team Group or Corsair as we have them or know they work on vendor boards

Also buy from good places with foot RMA like OCUK, MSI don't have UK RMA etc
