Looking to upgrade the terrible Technicolor TG582n due to issues

Hey all... So, currently using Utility Warehouse broadband, the landlord had it installed because it's cheap, I guess. The issue I'm having that while the speeds are good when everything is working, I'm having games disconnect all the time. Sometimes I can't even watch YouTube videos without the thing buffering like mad, then it suddenly all goes back to normal. I'm getting just short of 14mb/sec down which is pretty good on ADSL (no fibre where I live).

Today I've been playing Destiny 2 and the game disconnected countless times. I get lag spikes in Overwatch too, BDO keeps disconnecting when AFK, the list is long. I noticed that I have pretty much guaranteed connection issues when my housemate comes in. I asked her today if she takes pics when she's out, she said yes, I checked her phone and she had Samsung Cloud on upload when on wifi so I turned that off. Then I played some Destiny 2 and had 2 more disconnects. I use Ethernet into both my PC and PS4, everything else (phones, Kindle, Sonos are on wifi)

I've been through the router settings, assigned static IP to all the devices, messed with game mode, firewall, other settings. This is all over the last few months. No good.

I'm thinking about getting a new router. I've been looking at this Asus https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-RT-AC...00XUDWDZE/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

It's dual band, overall looks good. I don't want to spend a ton of money, I don't really need anything fancy, I don't think. I just want to try a different router to see if that is the actual issue. Would this Asus work with my current provider?

Alternatively, can you recommend something similar?

If your not bothered about wireless ac try this:

TP-LINK TD-W8968
Not that bothered tbh, I just want stable connection to my ethernet connected pc and ps4 on ADSL. I'll look into this, thanks mate.

Say my budget just went up to £100, because of wine consumption, what would be a decent step up? :P

Does your housemate know you turned off her backups to the cloud? Saturating the broadband is a minor annoyance to finding pics you thought were safe are lost without trace.

Anyhow UW, we've got that. I found the interface on the router was shocking, DMZ, port forward etc on it being clunky and confusing.

Am now running a BT Huawei HG612 which is rock solid, however it has no WiFi. Whatever ADSL router you get, you'll need your UW connection details, typically [email protected] and some complicated password.

Of course, the housemate knows about me disabling cloud syncing :)

Ok, I will be picking up the VR600 tomorrow. I found the [email protected] part of login details inside the router's gui, not sure about the password, will get in touch with my landlord tomorrow regarding it, hope they have it, should be in the welcome letter from UW but yeah, we all know that could have been thrown in the bin ages ago :)

Can you put the TG582n in modem mode? and get a router with a per device bandwidth limiter like an asus router and limit her upload speed.

This is a stock asus firmware, I think the merlin firmware has much more settings than this.

I don't know if I can even do that with the Technicolor. It is a very basic router. Thing is, sometimes I can be maxing out my connection, downloading something in the background and the games work fine, no lag. And sometimes I can't even watch youtube. Weird.

Also, just tried Destiny 2 with VPN and didn't disconnect once. Played for about an hour. Without VPN, I have not gone anywhere near even half an hour. Hmmm.

FYI you can use the 582n in modem mode. I'm doing it right now with an Asus router.
Are you using it with UW broadband? How is the connection for you? Just to update, I just tried a fix for Destiny 2, unbinding Cone(UDP) for certain port/ports and haven't had a disconnect in a while.

I'm with Plusnet. I've never had issues like you describe, just shoddy wifi and annoying whine from what I can only assume must be poor quality capacitors.

Have you done anything specific to the router or just pretty much left it default?

VR600 installed, left pretty much everything at default for now, will test with some Destiny 2 now and post back.

EDIT: Played Destiny 2 in the afternoon and evening. I'd say about 8 hours in total. Never had a connection issue. Not once did the game disconnect. Also what I found was that when I went to public events, there was always players there. Did about 20 of them and only once there was no other players around, even though a couple of guys turned up just as the event finished. With the old router, I'd see other players maybe once out of five public events.

I've read somewhere that some people have this issue in Destiny 2 when they go to these and see no other players. Apparently this is down to NAT. Not sure but I certainly see more players out in the open.

Also had zero BDO disconnects, no Youtube buffering. Looks rock solid. Happy now, no more of this nonsense. I'm not sure what was wrong with the Technicolor router but it was flaky as hell for me.
