Looks like I will be building a couple of rigs soon - thermal paste

Arctic MX-4 you can't go wrong with, if a higher end CPU especially Intel 14th gen then MX-6, if overclocking then maybe consider Thermal Grizzly or something more specialised.

Is MX6 just a new version of MX4 or is it better not seen any reviews of the paste

Slightly different pastes, MX-4 is easier to apply as well. On mid-range and/or heat/power efficient CPUs you likely won't see much difference between them but MX-6 can be a crucial couple of C more effective under heavy loads on stuff like the Intel 14th gen.

I've been using MX-4 for the last few builds. used kryonaught extreme for a watercooled build.

I tried artic silver a little while back, and wasn't that impressed.

I can't say I've noticed any real difference between brands.

I think getting the spread and the cooler seated correctly makes the difference.

A lot of people overtighten the cooler you don't need to.

Been using AS5 for probably 20 years and haven’t yet come across a real reason to switch. Should probably move to MX6 when it comes time to clean the radiator again in the summer.

You still use a 20 year old cpu and didnt need to repaste it? AS5 must be dang good on that 286.

I've had AS5 on CPUs which have been in use for 10 years without being redone without any compromise really to performance - can't say the same for some other pastes.

The main problem with AS5 as I've mentioned before it people persisting to apply it in ways which are less than ideal, then complaining it doesn't work as well as some of the other newer pastes :s though for any of the newer higher TDP CPUs I'd certainly use MX-6 over it.

As5 is electrically conductive so iv never bothered with it. The arctic mx-2,3 and 4 pastes iv delt with for years and has always been my go to stuff for price performance and longevity without being electrically conductive

Always used MX4, but moved to MX 6 last year and it's been great. I also tried thermal Thermal Grizzly - Kryonaut but couldn't get on with it..
